Hi folks.
We completed and moved into our house last week finally!
The previous owners seemed to have moved out themselves or they used a terrible removals company - lots of scuffs on walls and dents/scratches in the floor. They've also left loads of holes in the walls and tonnes of cables in every room where a tv bracket and sound system has been Angry
I don't suppose there's any point trying to get anything done about it as I just want to get on and enjoy living here but the old owners have been in touch several times now over things they think they've left behind. The first night the mother in law came round adamant they'd left a box of cutlery (they hadn't), the second time the EA rang insisting they'd left a mirror (they hadn't) and today, the husband turned up on my doorstep unannounced saying they'd left a picture behind from the bathroom. I said there was definitely nothing in there and flippantly asked 'do you want to look yourself' to which he said yes. I lost it a bit then and marched him around every room in the house and opened all the cupboards to prove to him we weren't trying to secretly steal anything of theirs even though they haven't left anything!!!!!!
Out of interest what is the position over things left in upon completion? I always thought that anything left was now your property. Either way, I'd give anything they left back as we have our own lovely things.
It's really annoying me that they keep hassling us when I've told them we don't have anything. Hopefully seeing inside will prove to him it's obviously still in a box somewhere at their new house.

What were these people doing with their dogs? There was one single black hair sticking out of the gap between the floorboards in the spare room this evening too. How am I still finding them? Are they just in the air? 😷🤢

legally, anything they have left which is not in the contract is still theirs.

My parents had this with a load of stuff left behind. You legally are not supposed to dispose of it, you are supposed to hang on to it until they come and get it.

In reality, everyone chucks it. I think the only time it would be an issue is if what was left behind was worth anything.

Our house before this one and they tried to leave their cat!! And I'm allergic to cats. Suffice to say we collected the poor cat and returned it to their disappointed faces.

My last house, I moved out to my parents because current house was not completed. So i had a full week to make eeverything prisitne, it was immaculate.

Moved in here and unfortunately they'd had 3 dogs and 17 cats (helped at a rescue) so it wasn't pleasant. Fortunately still living at parents and had 2 weeks of work.
Another house I moved into they'd left a whole load of junk in the loft including pages and pages of letters between a couple - could have written a book, made very entertaining reading! They also left some items which over the time I was there they became quite valuable as they were old but were by then what would now be considered desirable 'vintage'. Took them to a car boot when I was clearing the house and made a fortune (this was long before ebay)

One house i moved into there were bags and bags of rubbish and it was a right state - OK so it was a repo and i was expecting it.

What I wasnt expecting with my current house when i moved in was unflushed toilets, rubbish bags all strewn through the garden, glass shower screens I could hardly see through because of soap scum that had appeared since I iewed the property, sinks and dishwashers full of stuff still and no attempt at cleaning made in what looked like months. I wouldnt have minded but the person next door told me that they had just been watching TV the nights before so they clearly had time to actually do something. I would have been mortified to leave my house in such a state.

Admittedly, I like most others had left the spare paint for the rooms in the loft with the spare flooring in case they required, but I cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, wiped down all the skirts, floors etc and felt guilty that I didnt get time to pull the weeds out that had grown over the winter. Some people have no shame. I wouldnt have minded if I was expecting it but they seemed like respectable people
