Painting over backing paper

I can't face taking this off - it's my hall way /stairs so already a big job!

Got the vinyl wallpaper off. Backing paper in good condition. The web says I've to seal the edges with caulk to prevent peeling and then use an oil based primer to create a seal.

Anyone done this? Any other advice? This is my first ever DIY/decorating attempt and will be doing it in two hour bursts when kids in bed!!! I'm even renting an over stairs ladder...

I’ve done this with Matt paint on a hall and stairs and didn’t put anything else as a base coat. ( life’s too short for all that stripping!). After a couple of coats it looked fine.

Should add, it did bubble a bit when wet, but complexly flat after it had dried.

Thank you @JT05 that's reassuring. All the purists I've asked recoil in horror! 😂😂😂😂

Completely * not the new word I invented, 😊

I should add that I’m a bit of a perfectionist when decorating, but sometimes you’ve got to give in to time/energy/ cost. You don’t sit looking at a hall so minor imperfections are liveable.

It should be fine as long as it doesn’t lift. I once pointed over wallpaper in my student days (it was like a thick smooth backing paper) and it did bubble but flattened once dried. Can’t imagine that backing paper would bubble as it’ll be thin.
