What type of carpet should I be buying please?

I am replacing the carpet on the stairs and landing, 8 years after we moved in and declared it a priority! Current carpet is pale cream, and has worn a lot on the stairs. I have 2 young DC and need something very hard wearing, easy to spot clean and that will last as we are up and down the stairs all the bloody time.

I've never bought carpet before! We're putting either wood or amtico down in the hall and both receptions that go off the hall.

I can't have a stripe or a pattern in the carpet as there is a turn in my stairs which doesn't turn back on itself, so the pattern wouldn't work on the landing.

a good quality man-made fibre carpet should do the job.

Or an 80:20 wool:synthetic carpet in a heavy weight with decent thick underlay. Darker neutrals are more forgiving than cream and heathers with flecks of different colours hide dust and muck more effectively than solid colours.

What colour are the walls? Burgundy/ terracotta looks lovely and is very good tempered.

Thank you. Walls currently a mid cream, but we will redecorate as I want to get rid of the anaglypta and skim the walls. I will need a neutral carpet though. Thanks for the input on the composition - I will know what to say in the carpet shop now. Wow, when you say heathers with flecks of different colours, please would you be able to link to something like that? I struggle to visualise!

We’ve got 80/20 in stripes on the hall/stairs/landing and it has been far more hardwearing than the poly stuff we’ve laid elsewhere. We have a turn on the stairs but it looks fine. Thick underlay is a must too. Mid range is good enough ime

OP - if just Google heather carpets you'll get lots of examples.
