Carpet colour dilemma

Jazzakn · 27/02/2018 22:38

Can anyone help??? This is a bit of my lounge. We are just going to replace the carpet as it’s 24 years old!! I’m struggling to find a carpet colour to go with my weird sofa colour can anyone give me any suggestions? Would be very grateful 😊 there are windows either side of the fireplace which face east and another window opposite the fireplace so the lighting changes throughout the day.

Have you tried any samples in the room? I'd just a few samples or lighter and darker neutrals to try at home in day light, artificial lighting and different parts of the space.

JoJoSM2 · 27/02/2018 22:57

Or if you fancy sth less obvious, how about a herringbone one?

Yes I have. We have to walk through our lounge from the hall to get to the kitchen so I need something hardwearing. Have sort of settled on the idea of a Berber. Atm these are the three samples I have. At different times of the day each one is the ‘best’ lol. It’s driving me (and everyone around me) mad that I’m incapable of making a decision 😨

Think it’s too dark now for the difference between these to show up

I keep thinking the dark one looks a bit dull but some advice on websites say that carpets usually look lighter once they’ve been laid. Don’t know how true this is 🤔

I think in a high traffic area I'd go a bit darker still. The darkest of the three samples looks to be identical to the sofa colour in one of the photos, which isn't a good look. I wouldn't go for berber either as the loops get scuffed by vacuuming unless you have a cylinder vac and the traffic paths will show up more than on a twist/cut pile carpet. The berber with the brickwork fireplace will look old fashioned rather than stylish imo.

The herringbone a pp has posted is lovely. And the colour is a good one. I know it's pink, but the current carpet is a lot darker than those samples and you've lived with it for 25 years.

Mosaic123 · 28/02/2018 08:11

I really like the herringbone too.

The other ones are rather bland next to your sofa. Maybe you could consider a bright rug over the area of high wear if you want to choose the pale carpets?

numptynuts · 28/02/2018 08:24

Is there nice floorboards under there? With some rugs that'd be the look I'd go for. Nice house :)

Jazzakn · 28/02/2018 11:22

ooh thanks everyone for helping. I thought that berbers wouldn't show the traffic marks as much. I'm getting conflicting opinions when I look this up on line. If you think darker what sort of colour do you think? Still beige. I agree the herringbone one looks good :)

I wonder though if the darker one would look a bit lighter than the sofa once its laid and not the exact same colour. Haven't looked at the floorboards underneath - perhaps that's another idea.

I really like the colour of the herringbone JoJo posted a photo of. I don't know what other colours they do.

wowfudge · 28/02/2018 12:07

I did a reverse search on that photo and it's a sisal carpet, which I wouldn't have - sisal has to be stuck down and is a pain to clean spills up from. I'd go for a wool herringbone instead.

BubblesBuddy · 28/02/2018 12:20

Do be careful wth Berber pile. If it is high traffic, it will flatten out where you walk. A flat weave will last better.

Alternative Carpets do herringbone and and plenty of wool options. You can get samples via the web site. I think I would go for a darker neutral grey/beige. They do loads to suit every pocket.

Jazzakn · 28/02/2018 13:52

my carpet shop said the berber should be good for high traffic and not flatten. don't want manmade because of flattening. is flat weave different to twist?

I suspect they just want to close the sale as you've borrowed samples from them. What's your current carpet? That looks to be in good condition despite its age.

wowfudge · 28/02/2018 13:58

We had Berber in our old living room and it definitely flattened in front of where we sat and by the door. We have a twist carpet in our hall, stairs and landing where we live now which is great quality, of indeterminate age and showing no signs of flattening with use.

Jazzakn · 28/02/2018 17:29

That could be true hadn’t thought of that. Think I’m getting on his nerves tbh lol. It is still in good shape really just a very dated colour. It’s wool. Can’t remember if it’s 100% or 80-20 mix It’s been brilliant. Over the years we’ve had three kids, three dogs (all at different times) and a couple of cats. I just hate the polypropylene carpets as I think they squash and matt and just generally look a bit ugh after a couple of years ( have one in my bedroom). Just cant really afford to fork out for a carpet of the same quality we’ve got now as we’re doing the stairs and landing, dining room and lounge all at once!! Now everyone’s grown up thought I could go with a lighter colour 🤔🤔

80:20 mix is hardest wearing. Last time we bought carpet, we found one we wanted and bought it online. Got our own fitter. That way you cut out the mark up of the middle man, the retailer. Now I know that isn't supporting local businesses, however we had been messed around by one whose pricing wasn't transparent.

Jazzakn · 28/02/2018 17:42

Thanks for taking the time to show an interest It’s really nice of you 😊

We had a Cormar 80/20 laid in our family room and up the stairs 3 years ago and it's wearing really well. We have polypropylene in the bedrooms which is easier to get stains out of but it has flattened more than the wool carpet.

We ordered online and used our own fitter, the carpets and underlay were much cheaper online (we used Cloud 9 underlay).

Only the last link seems to work.

Jazzakn · 01/03/2018 09:23

The Boucle ones look really nice. Thank you!
