Help me pick a kitchen please!

Hi, I’m getting a new kitchen and totally torn over the style I want. I really do feel 50/50 over the two styles and can’t decide!!

Type 1 - solid oak painted a light grey (love the dark greys/blacks but as kitchen doesn’t get the best light, I think a dove grey would be best), white quartz worktop, oak floor and white subway tiling.

Type 2 - white Matt handless kitchen, oak flooring, subway tiling in a colour (I have a pale pink sample that I love) and an off-white quartz worktop.

The kitchen will be open plan with a living area, dining room and playroom. As a whole, the room gets lots of light BUT the part of the room where the kitchen will be is the darkest. I’ve narrowed it down to these two styles but can’t choose between them!

Any opinions/photos of your similar kitchens would be gratefully received!

Which flooring works best with the rest of the open plan layout?

Is this your forever home?

Lightbulb57 · 26/02/2018 14:18

We’re going for oak flooring throughout. I had wanted parquet, but just going for planks due to budget. Yes, it is our forever home.

I toyed with the idea of tiles in the kitchen area and wood everywhere else, but I want the same floor throughout.

What type of house do you live in? To you generally lean towards more modern decor or traditional?

Lightbulb57 · 26/02/2018 14:28

Our house was built in 1990 and I like fairly simple and uncluttered looks. I think both styles would suit the house, we live next door to a listed building and share a boundary wall to our back garden. So although it’s a modern house, there is a little bit of character which means either style would suit.

I'd go with the matt white as grey is extremely popular, but will soon be out fashion. The pale pink tiles will doubtless date in time, but if you like them, have them.

JoJoSM2 · 26/02/2018 14:39

I'd go with a white kitchen. We got a mix of navy and white cabinets last year and I'm already bored of it... A white kitchen has an excellent longevity and you can always change the tiles in a few years if you fancy a change or add some other pops of colour to keep it fresh.

Lightbulb57 · 26/02/2018 14:45

Yes, I did think this. But then with wooden cabinets you could repaint them as well. Hmmm. Dh doesn’t have a preference either. Although the white handless kitchen is more modern, I do agree and think it won’t date as much as the other style.

What way does the room face?

We’ve got white cabinets and a navy island with grey tiles and oak floor. Room is south facing so loads of light

Tobuyornot99 · 26/02/2018 15:10

Have the wooden kitchen but painted white? You have more leeway then to update with tiles / accessories, and you're having the best of both options in my opinion.

Lightbulb57 · 26/02/2018 15:20

The area where the kitchen will be is east facing.

I think it's rubbish to talk about which will date quickest (just my view) - unless you're intending spending £££ and don't plan to replace for the next 20 odd years. Most people (especially with more affordable options online etc and companies that specialise in replacing doors etc) will want to replace / update a kitchen well before it becomes horribly out of date.

I'd get sample doors for both types, put them somewhere you'll see them 50 times a day and see which one looks best in the actual space you have with the light, and which looks best against your existing furniture/ next to flooring sample etc.

Go with what you like - don't worry about the negativity around grey, as you say, you can always paint it a different colour. And if you love it, what difference does it make if the MN advice says it will date? Smile

(I have Matt white handleless units in my utility room and light grey / dark grey solid wood units in my open plan kitchen so I'm no help at all Grin Grin)

Believeitornot · 26/02/2018 15:37

We used to have an east facing kitchen - morning sun. It was white and looked nice.

I think either type will work well. I’d probably go for the white handleless with coloured tiles for interest.

JoJoSM2 · 26/02/2018 16:00

With the modern vs traditional question, I'd think about the rest of your house so that the style matches. A simple 90's style sound more like modern units would look in keeping.

Bit dark on this photo.
But mine is similar.
It's all actually grey, with but v light, with white tiles

I love your kitchen! It looks great! Is the worktop white? Or is that grey too?

I have a grey kitchen and white worktop and love it

veuveo · 27/02/2018 18:28

These were the colours
The grey seems lighter than those pictures!
And the worktop is called Alaska white, but it's a very subtle v light grey

I have virtually the same dilemma between modern handleless and wooden shaker. I used Pinterest and soon realised that all the nice photos I was choosing to save were of the shaker styles. I just prefer a warm comfy look to the operating theatre but I didn't realise until I looked at my Pinterest saves and saw a pattern.
I like the idea of being able to paint the doors in the future and -dare I say it - flat doors already look dated to me.
