Neighbours parking - diagram attached!

Was wondering if there was anything I could do about a neighbour parking here.
Basically you can see by the diagram that I live in a house with 2 parking spaces, one behind the other. My next door neighbour is the same set up, so they park one behind the other on their drive, but they have a big trailer on a van which protrudes onto the pavement (this is relevant!) Their van/car are green on the diagram and mine are blue.
Basically Mr BMW (red car) has moved in over the road, and as he only has one parking space on his drive next to his house (sorry diagram doesn’t show this), he parks his second car right opposite my driveway.
Because next door neighbours van/trailer is sticking out I can’t get a swing on my car to to turn sharply as I’m reversing, and because Mr BMW is parked opposite my drive I’m having to do a 5 point turn to get out of my drive.
This coupled with the fact that it’s pitch black in the morning and I live on a bend so can’t see what it coming is really stressing me out.
I know I should probably try and reverse in, but would still need to do a 5 point turn to get out forwards.
I’ve started parking on the road opposite where Mr BMW parks when he goes out, purely so I can just jump in my car and go at 5.30am.
Is there anything I can do re this parking situation?

We used to have a similar issue (very similar layout). In the end, we widened the drive (shortened the fence and put a line of paving slabs down - nothing spectacularly expensive). Made a huge amount of difference.

May be an idea re the drive. Maybe speak to neighbours and get their thoughts on removing the fencing between the 2 drives. May give everyone a bit of extra room when getting kids in/out of the car too.

Oh yes, we also removed the fence in the middle and not because both us and the neighbours had hit it Wink

FluffyWuffy100 · 20/02/2018 20:51

5 point turn is fine. Relax. Breath. Just do it. Reverse in to your drive tho.

Pseudousername · 20/02/2018 20:51

Maybe just do a five point turn - what's the big deal with that?!
No more than a couple mins for you and every one can park.
No one is doing anything particularly illegal on the regular, you all live on the same street, just get on with it?!
Mountain out of a molehill indeed.

parkingnightmare · 20/02/2018 20:57

It’s not about the extra time, I would happily set my alarm for 2 mins earlier if I thought that would help.
It’s about the extra time I’m stuck in the middle of the road with cars speeding round a blind bend and not seeing me until they’ve almost hit me!
It’s the combination of neighbours van across the pavement (which additionally means I cannot see the traffic coming from my right hand side until I’m stuck in the middle of the road), the bmw causing me to do a 5 point turn, living on a blind bend, and cars driving way too fast!

Just the van sticking out on the pavement was just about doable, as at least when I managed to see around it I could whizz off quickly, but now the addition of the bmw is making it really hard work.
Alternatively, the bmw on its own, without a van protruding would also be just about doable.
It’s the combination of them both.

We have a similar issue in our road. Neighbour opposite parks second car outside their house as do both my next door neighbours. Makes getting out of my drive a tricky manoeuvre. It doesn't bother me hugely I think it's a common issue caused by small driveways and multi car households. Our road is fairly quiet though so I can take my time over getting off my drive. What does irritate me though is people parking in the turning circle just up from my house. I need to turn if I want to reverse onto my drive and that's a nightmare!

ViceAdmiralAmilynHoldo · 20/02/2018 21:06

I'd reverse in @parkingnightmare. I think it's the easiest solution. I get really freaked out by people who reverse onto main roads.

Ariela · 21/02/2018 01:17

Technicaly you should always reverse in & drive out.
If the fence gap is too narrow, can you cut a strip off a fence panel and replace the edging and move the end post to make it easier?

Does Mr Green's trailer force people using the pavement to walk in the road? If so, I'd get somebody else to report it to the police/council

wowfudge · 21/02/2018 07:14

If it is such a dangerous bend and people drive too fast, would speed bumps on the road be a solution?

ifanciedanamechange · 21/02/2018 07:19

Reverse in and drive out. Trailer man is obstructing pavement. BMW man doing nothing wrong.

OakFlooring · 21/02/2018 10:17

I think you could also speak to your local councillor about the speeding issue. They could ask highways if there was any traffic calming that could be done.

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 21/02/2018 19:41

Definitely reverse on. I have heard of people getting tickets for overhanging a pavement and advised to rectify. Reasoning is it makes it difficult for pedestrians having to step into road and both pedestrian and drivers to have a clear view of traffic scene ahead etc

Possibly approach neighbour in a looking for solution approach that may result in them saying didn't realise a problem ie. If you say you are speaking to Highways about speed of traffic on bend etc but not in an accusatory way.

Hey OP, can’t offer any advice really, just a parking result to make you smile (lighthearted!) Moved to new house just before Christmas purposelessly with big drive with plenty of parking after awful parking at my last house. New house can fit 4 cars on drive, funny shape so 3 side by side and one behind the other on left. However due to brick post and a railing cars would have to be shuffled about. I only have my car but thinking when dc are older I am having the drive block paved and wanted to improve access, it’s all dropped kerb outside my house.

I speak to neighbours their drive fits two cars one behind the other, no issue with me getting drive block paved, or removing two of the pillars and railing and happy for me to remove a tree. Neighbour opposite had two car drive and six cars, one of which a smart car parks outside my railing/tree. Not big enough gap for a full size car but smart car fits but makes it really difficult for my neighbour to be able like you to swing in or reverse into their drive plus the tree restricts their vision even more.

I was home the day two of the pillars, railing and the tree was removed and the smart car driver literally parked, came out looking st what had happened scratching their head all confused and then drove off. Childish I know but did make me smile Grin

@carrielou2007 that did make me smile! Mr BMW must have read my thread, as the past few days he’s parked about a metre further down the road. But that metre means I can reverse straight off my drive and swing round with no problems. Let’s hope it continues!
