Nice areas of Stockport?

We are looking to move within Greater Manchester and I have started looking further out in south Manchester. Are there areas of Stockport that are nice? Does anyone know Davenport?

A lot depends on whether you need schools and where you'll be travelling to for work.

Mirrorxx · 20/02/2018 11:53

We both work in central Manchester and want to travel by train. No need for schools now but it’s a consideration for the future

Is Heaton Moor Stockport?

SporkInTheToaster · 20/02/2018 11:57

Bramhall.

MissFritton65 · 20/02/2018 11:57

I'd recommend Marple or Romiley as both have a village feel with bars and restaurants plus easy train route into the City centre. There is the added bonus of the Peak District on your doorstep too.

TricksyLiesmith · 20/02/2018 11:57

Cheadle , cheadle Hulme , woodsmoor , Heston Mersey Heston moor and Bramhall are all nice . Bramhall is expensive though . Davenport is good too . Generally schools in those areas are outstanding .

fusspot66 · 20/02/2018 11:58

Yes all.of Tricksy's list

TricksyLiesmith · 20/02/2018 12:05

squarecorners · 21/02/2018 10:24

Bramhall is nice and villagey with great access to Manchester.

Cheadle is nice too, Bruntwood Park is fab.

I'm not so keen on the Heatons.

hardheadedwoman · 21/02/2018 10:39

Poynton!

MissSueFlay · 21/02/2018 10:41

Disley is a bit further out along the A6 than the places Tricksy has listed, but it's 30 mins by train direct into Manchester Piccadilly. Lovely village right on the edge of the Peak District, and Lyme Park (National Trust) on the doorstep.

MissSueFlay · 21/02/2018 10:41

Oh yes, Poynton is lovely too!

SparklyMagpie · 21/02/2018 10:44

I live in Cheadle, you have Cheadle village which has some coffee shops and nice pubs etc, also thats not far from Bruntwood park and has a couple more it's inbetween the primary and high school too

wowfudge · 21/02/2018 11:58

We live near New Mills, so just in Derbyshire. Still just 30 mins from Manchester by train and two train stations. Plus there's an express bus that goes to the airport.

squarecorners · 21/02/2018 18:27

Davenport is a good shout then. My mum has also moved from Woodsmoor to Cheadle Hulme (walking distance of Waitrose!) which has all of those things you're ticking. The Heatons can go either way. Heaton Moor is the nicest but busy, Heaton Chapel is coming up (my grandparents lived there and we apparently managed to get silly money for their house) but a bit too close to the rougher parts of Stockport for my liking. Wouldn't even bother with Heaton Mersey and Heaton Norris. Gatley is also nice but a bit further out, or there's a lot of new build houses that have been built on Woodford airfield.

If you narrow it down, check that the train station closest to where you're looking has lots of services - a couple of them in Stockport only have a handful of trains and a friend has to walk to a station further away to get into Manchester

user29242893 · 13/07/2020 12:14

Many of the trains run half hourly with extra services in the morning/evening rush hour so it can be a bit of a wait at the wrong time. The tram network is more frequent but closer to the city centre, however it takes longer to get anywhere. The areas with the tram network in the south of the city closest to Stockport tend to be expensive (i.e. Didsbury, Chorlton), the housing stock tends to be smaller with smaller gardens. North Manchester is cheaper.

Bramhall is nice but expensive, the other areas like Davenport) would be cheaper. Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme are pretty expensive too. Cheadle doesn't have a train station, you'd have to go to Gatley.

What is your price range? What sort of house are you looking for?

bumbleb33s · 13/07/2020 19:55

We had a house in Heaton Mersey, really lovely area, nice village with nice bars and shops, park close by, Stockport centre close by, also Didsbury which is thriving is close by too

We were purchasing a house pre-covid in Heaton Moor which eventually fell through because of the current climate. We decided to continue with the sale of our house and have gone into rented. Since lockdown was lifted prices in Heaton Moor have gone insane! We're looking at the £470k mark and it doesn't seem to be stretching anyhwere near as far. We've now widened our search to encompass the Heatons as well as Davenport/Woodsmoor. There are some gorgeous Victorian/Edwardian houses in tree-lined roads in both Davenport and Woodsmoor and your money seems to go a lot further. There seems to be a bit of a buzz in Davenport at the mo with new bars/restaurants opening in the last year or two (plus Bramhall is only a few minutes drive in the car).
