I have peninsula. Had room for an island but allowed for a much better configuration and the room is more versatile as a result. We were able to have a proper kitchen / dining / family room - with an island it would have had to be a dining kitchen with a seating area

went for a peninsular. It gives a psychological barrier between the cooking end and the living end of the room, plumbing and wiring is easier, and you have a continuous run of worktop. You don't have to walk round and round a big island.

you can have doors (and I suppose drawers) on both sides of the peninsular units if you want. On the social side they can be quite shallow, for shelves of glasses, books, bottles etc. Nobody can reach the back of a kitchen unit anyway.

We have the hob in ours and I like to be able to cook and chat when we have visitors while still having a very defined kitchen area with the psychological barrier Piglet refers to above

We have doors on both sides

I think that is what I am missing the continuous run of work top - I have a large island now 90x250 opposite 360 run of units and I always feel I am flipping to one side or the other - so a galley kitchen in effect. I am a messy cook and like to spread out maybe peninsular would be better.

What is a peninsula? Blush

PickAChew · 18/02/2018 22:51

Continuous with the wall worktops.

Ours is just a narrow peninsula and has the sink in it, same as when it was on the outside wall. The kids seem to like tossing stuff in the sink from the wrong side!

If you have children who will play the other side of the peninsula, getting round it all the time is annoying. Believe me - I’ve done it. I now have a very large kitchen and my Island is 1300 x 3400 plus a dining area. It does not separate the kitchen from the dining area but provides a massive work space with a hob and a veg prep sink. Islands have two exits around each end!

If you can have a really big island with back to back storage then it’s worth it. A small Island isn’t much use in my view.

Bubblesbuddy,
How much space do you have on either side of island? I am trying to find out how big island can i have with comfortable space around it to walk.

Redoing our kitchen, have the space but no island. We have enough worktop, more will just attract clutter.
