White emulsion coat before pastel?

We have a room painted dulux matte mint macaroni (duck egg), which we are hojng to paint crown matte moonlight bay (pale blue). Would we need to do a coat of white as an undercoat, or is it not necessary when painting over a pastel type shade? Thanks!

IMO a coat or two of white emulsion will prevent any colour or shading showing through. It also highlights to your eye any defects in the plaster that might benefit from patching or smoothing before you start you decorating.

It's especially beneficial when there has been work such as patching holes or chasing wires into the wall, when it will also seal the surface and prevent absorbent patches showing on the final texture.

White emulsion is much cheaper than colours, especially if you like fancy brands, so it may save you having to apply an extra coat of the colour.

Tbh, modern pale coloured paint is thick and saturRed enough not to need a white undercoat.

Darker paint is a different proposition, though. I always undercoat that in a paler shade of the same tone as, without the titanium white pigment, it lacks opacity.

You are painting over a similar sort of shade, and Crown will cover nicely in 2 coats. I'd just do the colour myself. I love Moonlight Bay.

Very much an amateur here though!
