Flooring help!

It's for a large hall and open plan kitchen/diner/living room
Originally I wanted a grey herringbone Karndean that I'd seen but having thought about it I've changed my mind and would like a light wood herringbone instead, so now I'm stuck between parquet, Amtico, Karndean and engendered Wood.
So anybody with experience of any of these flooring types I could use your help in selling it to me or ones to avoid, I've added a picture of the colour I'd like, this one is a parquet.
We're a 4 person house hold, 2DD's aged 9 and 2 and one fur ball.

Have you had quotes for all the options? I presume you are not having underfloor heating?
We went for engineered wood layed in our kitchen on a mixture of concrete and timber floors. So far so good, but it's not getting a hard life. It is surprisingly cold underfoot in the winter which I hadn't anticipated.

This was the stuff we used: www.v4woodflooring.co.uk/wood-flooring-products/zigzag-nordic-beach
Amtico or Kandean will be 'less deep' and hence you may not need to trim any existing doors...

It's a complete reno house so no doors in the way or furniture, we've had rough quotes as we aren't ready for it just yet, no underfloor heating we previously had tiles and found them fine in winter etc. Just going to have a nosey at your link, thanks!

Ahh yes I've looked at them ones before, I really like them but I don't know anybody who's had engineered wood so I'm a bit wary of it. I looks really beautiful though.

What is the subfloor? Ie What's it going to be laid on top of?
Karndean and Amtico are basically fancy vinyl laid in individual strips or tiles. Amtico was always the more expensive slightly premium brand, but in terms of performance they're very similar.
When you say parquet, Do you mean solid woodblock laid in a herringbone pattern and sanded and sealed?
For the engineered flooring, is it strip or a herringbone pattern?

user263781638 · 15/02/2018 17:18

All would be herringbone pattern, that is the look I'm going for. The parquet would be reclaimed, sanded and sealed.
I know Karndean and Amtico are basically the same but it's the effect I want and Karndean only do 4 herringbone pattern whereas Amtico have a much wilder variety.
The subfloor is concrete we've had them filled in all the prep with be done by us which ever we go for (my DH is in the trade and knows people who owe him a few favours or two)

I have recently had Karndean parquet style flooring laid and love it! I've not lived with it for long so cannot comment on its longevity, but so far it feels like it will withstand family life! This is the 'blonde oak' colour' (assuming my photos actually appear!). People say that it is all about the fitter and I must say the fitter we had seemed excellent so hopefully that will add to its longevity as it is so well laid. I specifically wanted a floor which had a bit of a sheen to it, rather than as matt as natural wood can look, because we have quite a dark kitchen and I just wanted to maximise any reflective surfaces. But it's not shiny shiny, just enough to reflect a bit of daylight in front of the doors to the garden. You mention the grey Karndean herringbone, we actually have that too, in a bathroom, it's nice but nowhere near as lovely as the blonde oak. So far we love it, and it actually priced up quite favourably compared to other types of floorings. Our subfloor is concrete and the fitter laid two layers of latex to make it absolutely flat. It is quite cold to the feet on a cold morning, but nowhere near as cold as ceramic/porcelain tiles. We love it!

Jelly I'm sold after seeing yours! It's perfect and exactly how I want it! So thank you
My mum has Karndean and it's been going 6 years in hers now and still looks brand new, I know it's hard wearing so should fit our lifestyle well.

Glad you like it OP! We've also got it extending into our hall and it really looks classic and quite traditional in the hall yet modern in the kitchen...well we think so anyway! Grin
We are still deciding on paint colours however (hence the bare plaster wall in one of the pics)...so if anyone has any ideas.....

Jelly your floor looks fabulous. The karndean and Amtico will require a lot less in maintenance than the engineered (particularly oiled and waxed finishes) or solid floors. They're frequently specified for shop flooring so will cope with heavy traffic. They'll also be considerably cheaper.
If I ever win the lottery I'd have oak woodblock laid herringbone with a 2 block border with cork or merbau strip, but even then I wouldn't lay it in a kitchen.

Whisper99 · 16/02/2018 08:02

Jelly

The flooring is superb! I have heard that too that it's all about how it's laid.

We are having all of our downstairs concreted over. Can you please expand on the other layers that they have done? Is it screed or silicon that needs to go over the concrete?

How much did you pay per square meters for preparation and labour? Without the cost for the vinyl.

Thanks!
