I Need New Storage Heaters

I live in the middle of nowhere and have storage heaters. They are at least 25 years old.
We need to replace one and I wondered if anyone has any experience of newer types.
We spend a fortune on electricity despite running as much as we can on Economy 7 rate.

So if a new one is better that our older ones, we could consider changing more.

You'll save an absolute fortune by just installing gas. We got a full gas central heating installation for 5k for a 3 bed semi and our utility bills are about a third of what they used to be it pays for itself so quickly

No mains gas within 15 miles of me. No mains sewerage either.
Really is the middle of nowhere

What about oil heating? It would be expensive to install, but cheaper to run in the long term.

I had old storage heaters for years, I feel your pain!

glitterbiscuits · 02/02/2018 10:28

The problem with installing oil or bottled gas would be huge financial outlay to start with, plumbing, radiators, etc. And then new flooring or carpets for every room as the carpets etc are fitted around the storage heaters.

Which have q good article about modern storage heaters. It really depends on your budget and the size/use of room.

glitterbiscuits · 02/02/2018 10:37

Thanks @Shmithecat I had a quick glance. I had no idea there were so many types. Good start for some more research

all electric heaters have the same efficiency, despite a lot of babble. Newer ones have better controls and timers. A heated brick holds the same energy regardless of its age.

have you looked into economy 10 tariff? It may be available.

also better insulation, of course.

glitterbiscuits · 02/02/2018 17:03

Thanks @specialsubject . I did wonder if newer bricks would be more efficient. So your post was really helpful. Its Economy 7 or nothing as far as Tariffs go.

Dimplex quantum’s are the best on the market at the moment I believe but they’re not cheap - 10k ish for a 3 bed house.

Could you install a wood burner? We don't have gas either and just don't use the storage heater now as it's just a rip off. We have a wood burner in front room (it kicks out heat so doors open plus heat rises) you'll be surprised how much heat It kicks out. For the rooms over night these oil radiators by swan with a built in timer are a god send! They stay hot for a good while after they turn off so we set them to go on and off through the night so the room still stays warm but we aren't using electric all through the night...

Also black out blinds!

Just to check - when I lived with storage heaters it took a lot of talking to get economy 10 and it made such a difference. There was initial ' no sorry' until I found the account manager who knew it was possible.

Might be worth an argument.

Something about that site worries me. From the grammar and spelling, to the iffy claims... No evidence but be careful.

glitterbiscuits · 02/02/2018 22:31

I agree @specialsubject “your eligible” was enough to put me off.

OK, apologies for a maybe-dodgy link. I know the Scottish Government offers grants to update storage heaters, and assume other UK countries might too, so would advise the OP to google and see!
