2.9m Patio Doors with Side Window Panels

Hi we are mid build. Brickwork almost done - have left a 2.9m opening for patio doors and side panels with window openings at top - trouble is I’m now worrying about if this is too big and will be cold or will but me looking out into a sometime messy garden - thinking I should have had 3/4 length side panels with windows. Does anyone have this size and are they happy with it / or can you give reasons for deciding why you chose what you did. Ruled out bifolds due to double the price and wanted some kind of fly windows at side of doors. Any views greatly appreciated. Have attached examples of both - both would be white upvc

We nearly did this but went with 3 door bi folds. Sorry if that’s not helpful but I love them and am so glad we didn’t get normal doors!

Fruitbat1980 · 31/01/2018 22:57

Ps we haggled (Anglian) and ended up paying a third of original quote price. They are CF (cheeky fuckers)

Ours are 4 sliding doors and take up most of our 23ft back room. Defiantly won’t regret it, when it’s summer and the sun is setting you’ll love it! Them doors are the reason we bought our house and it isn’t cold. Just get some curtains to hide the messy garden

All gardens look shit at this time of year, give it a month or two and the view will improve!

Bumping as been worrying all night

We are having 5m of glass at the back (again bifold though). It will be fine - was just chatting with our builder yesterday about how good glass is nowadays at keeping heat in.

HawaiiFiveOh · 01/02/2018 07:03

We have similar. I think it was a 2.6 m opening, we went for French doors with side panels pretty much like pic, but without small windows at top. For us it was a compromise on cost too vs bifold or sliding (and also we left it too late to order!)
It works well for us, no regrets. Haven't used them in summer yet Smile

Baxdream · 01/02/2018 07:18

We have a similar gap but with bifolds. The room is definitely warm enough so I wouldn't worry

FluffyWuffy100 · 01/02/2018 09:58

Go for as much window as possible

2.9 metres wide?

I would say that's really not a huge opening at all - it's actually on the conservative side compared to many extensions. Definitely not huge. Provided the glazing has a decent u-value, it shouldn't be cold at all.

The messy garden is another matter - but that is sortable, right?

whiskyowl · 01/02/2018 13:09

Oh, and the three quarter length is definitely VERY old-fashioned now. It's very 1990s conservatory and not nearly as desirable as full-length windows. Not even close.

OhMyGoddd · 01/02/2018 13:12

Get bifolds.

Has the first photo got curved floorboards??

CookieKegs · 01/02/2018 15:12

Not my finished extendion. Downloaded a pic for example. Cant afford the bifolds unfortunately, and really want to be able to open a window to the side.

Do yiu have any other way of getting air into the are ie: a window? Choosing the doors on cost and ventilation.

It's amazing what you worry about during the build that goes away after.
For the topic, we got 4.8m wide and 2.4m high with a slider and a swing door in the mix and it's fine.
We did go for triple glazing in the end due to worries about cold draughts and the cost was barely over double at that size.
In terms of the view, we couldn't really see the garden before due to the layout, now we can, but we'll get to m makingy it nice at some stage!

HawaiiFiveOh · 01/02/2018 16:28

Hi OP, this is the best pic I have right now, during construction.

I realise this is an old thread. Came here looking for advice on French doors, just wondered if HawaiiFiveOh is still around and if so, could you let me know the width of the glass in the side panels? and in the doors. It's hard to visualise sizes. Also, how tall are the doors?
