Pulled up carpet yesterday... beautiful parquet flooring! Dilemma re children bedroom

Yesterday the builders pulled up the carpet and revealed some truly beautiful parquet flooring underneath, in fantastic condition. I was practically dancing with joy!

However now I’m thinking sensibly. I’m definitely going to keep in the hallway but what about the children’s bedrooms.

Would you carpet in children bedroom (5 and 8) or would you leave the parquet flooring?

Also, any suggestions whether the floor can be “protected”?

Thanks

It's pretty robust - ours is varnished. I'd be concerned about noise in children's rooms, especially if they play in their rooms. You can get play rugs, etc.

Parquet flooring and rug.

Firenight · 31/01/2018 07:04

This is what rugs were made for. Definitely show don’t carpet over.

ShiningWhit · 31/01/2018 07:10

Gosh you are lucky. It's is really robust - clean it up. Get a rug for warmth and enjoy. Makes cleaning a lot easier - especially if they are ill! but you will notice more noise at the outset.

Oh you lucky duck. We're in a 1930s house and I was desperate to pull up the swirly 70s carpet and find glorious parquet when we moved in but no joy - only floorboards - and after looking at the price of it, we won't be getting new parquet unless we have a small lottery win. I agree with the others - big rug for warmth and playing on, but keep the parquet. Hard floors are best for racing cars and wind up toys anyway.

Keep the carpets for now and have the parquet when they are older.

We lived in Switzerland for a while and parquet floors were the norm.

Use protective pads on all furniture as otherwise the floor will mark. Ensure the varnish is well maintained as if not, they can get stained with traffic marks and spillages. I am a complete convert to no carpets. Warm rugs for lying on are a good idea.

Lucky lucky you!!! I live in a house that has quarry tiles and new wooden floorboards now.... I miss the parquet!

walkingdowntheboulevard · 31/01/2018 07:18

Parquet all the way, throw a rug down in the bedrooms if you find it a busy noisy.

Believeitornot · 31/01/2018 07:21

Would the rooms get cold? Wouldyou spend half your time screeching at the kids to mind the floor, even with rugs?

I’d keep the carpet until they’re older to be honest. It’s wasted on them.

whiskyowl · 31/01/2018 07:45

What wood is the parquet?

If it's a very hard wood, and it's a bit bashed around, I'd be tempted to do a kind of minor restoration job on it - just a bit of reglueing rather than sanding it all back to perfection only for the kids to stab it with scissors/spill Ribena everywhere, etc etc etc Then, when they are older you can do a proper restoration with the full sanding and refinishing.

You really are lucky!

parquet and rugs. definitely.

brownelephant · 31/01/2018 07:48

is there a room underneath (noise)?
does the room tend to be cold?

if yes to one of those I would use insulation mats/underlay & laminate (lego friendly) or carpet.

Lweji · 31/01/2018 07:50

I don't like carpet in bedrooms because of allergies.
Much better to have a wooden floor that can be properly cleaned.

WhatWouldOliviaPopeDo · 31/01/2018 07:53

I am SO jealous! We were desperate to find parquet under the tatty old carpet when we moved into our house. No such luck. Definitely parquet and rugs for the kids' room. Would be a crime to re-cover it!

flirtygirl · 31/01/2018 08:08

Definitely parquet. I dont like carpet in bedrooms and hard flooring means kids can do arts and crafts and play with trains and cars much easier.

Its also easier to clean and never goes musty and smelly like carpet. Wood and rugs all the way here.

user187656748 · 31/01/2018 08:11

As with any hard floor it can be slippery though. DS2 has take a tumble on ours a few times when running around wearing socks. Ours really needs sanding back and waxing though. The cost for doing that was surprisingly reasonable when I checked recently.

Parquet. 100%.

I have 3 children (7,10 and 11) and we pulled up all carpet in their rooms 2 years ago. Unfortunately there were nasty floorboards so we paid a fortune and had a beautiful hard wood floor laid over the boards.

Bought a few cheap wool rugs from Ikea, for softness underfoot and a bit of colour.

Carpet is not a good surface for a children's room. Lego / craft / painting, or vomiting illness - hard flooring is better.

Parquet can be swept, vacuumed, mopped.

IMHO it would be madness to replace beautiful parquet with plasticy laminate!

Ikea rugs can actually be washed in the washing machine (I've done this twice following tummy bugs). Wash on cold, drape over upper stair rail to dry.

Parquet / wood floors are not cold at all.

expatmigrant · 31/01/2018 09:08

Parquet all the way. I find carpets pretty gross full stop.

Ohyesiam · 31/01/2018 10:19

We are an asthmatic family, so only have hard wood floors, and it's all been good. Warm, easy to clean, noise has not been a problem.

Worieddd · 31/01/2018 10:41

Lucky you!
Can we see a pic?
