Jack n’ Jill Bathrooms

Currently considering bathroom extensions/renovations for a house we’re very keen on... has anyone got a Jack n’ Jill bathroom? Any feedback please?

By “Jack n’ Jill” bathroom, I mean it can be accessed by one of the bedrooms as an ensuite, but also has a door to the corridor, so could be used by others too.

The options are large Jack n’ Jill bathroom (bath and separate shower) to be used by all 3 top floor bedrooms. Or a small ensuite shower room for 1 of the bedrooms and a medium bathroom (shower over bath) for 2 of the bedrooms.

Thinking of practicalities, as well as potential resale attractiveness in future.

Any thoughts welcome. Thanks!

Depends how you feel about privacy/potentially walking in on each other. The occupant of the bedroom might not be thrilled about people being able to access their room via the bathroom. You'd need locks on both sides of the bedroom door as well as the bathroom door to corridor. Wouldn't appeal to me - I'd prefer a communal bathroom with no en suite to this arrangement.

If you can squeeze in two then do that. We have a jack and Jill bathroom and it’s fine but only because it was the only way. If you can squeeze in two instead then that’s better. I don’t value big bathrooms anyway.

“By “Jack n’ Jill” bathroom, I mean it can be accessed by one of the bedrooms as an ensuite, but also has a door to the corridor, so could be used by others too”

Or a bedroom on the other side of the bathroom. Some of the newer houses where I live have this configuration. It isn’t something I would care for. People will forget to lock/unlock doors.

MiddleClassProblem · 28/01/2018 14:20

I hate them. You have to removed to lock and unlock the other door particularly if it’s not your house. And then if the door is locked you have to wait and listen out for it to be free/hoping they’ve remembered to unlock it rather than hearing someone come out or even see them cons out. It’s just awkward.

I’ve seen lots in America and it does work well imo.

I would hate to live with a J&J bathroom and would have to alter any house that had one.

SandLand · 28/01/2018 14:27

Is there another bathroom (and gedrooms) on another floor?
Personally, I'd prefer one big bathroom. Second choice would be 2 smaller rooms. Door into my bedroom direct from a bathroom anyone could access would be my last choice.

100 % what BackingVocals said.

Maggiewashere · 28/01/2018 14:39

Having been a guest in a house with a J and J bathroom, I agree with what MiddleClassProblem said!

We had one... remodelled to have two instead.

Feezles · 28/01/2018 15:01

We have one. At the moment, it works very well, as the ensuite door is to DD's bedroom, so it makes bath and bedtime very easy. That said, I'm keen to eventually get the door to DD's room removed and just have the door to the corridor. This is because:

  1. it is the main family bathroom, and the only one with a bath. I currently can't use the bath once DD is in bed, as it would wake her up. I want my bath back!
  2. DD's room is quite small, and having two doors (one to the J&J, and one to the corridor) really cuts in to the usable space.

So, while it is quite handy for us now, overall, I would rather it wasn't a J&J.

KittyKK · 28/01/2018 15:05

Thanks all. That’s really helpful feedback.

Just thinking about who would use the “Jack n’ Jill” set up and it would be just guest room for next 5 years or so (mostly inlaws)...but then when the kids are a bit older they would use the other 2 top floor bedrooms... so the idea of them sharing with grandma and the different door locks doesn’t work so well!! Thanks

Hate them.

Would much rather pop out into the hallway for 30 secs wrapped in a towel than have to fuck about locking and unlocking two doors. Also you loose valuable wall space in the bathroom.

BusterTheBulldog · 28/01/2018 17:09

I’ve never lived in a house with one, but I think they’re ok? Not much of a big deal to lock both to me, possibly wouldn’t like it off main bedroom but gues bedroom or a room when realistically only one person using at night would be ok I think

brizzledrizzle · 28/01/2018 17:11

I thought a J&J bathroom was one shared between two bedrooms - we had one for a while and the DCs both had a door to it from their rooms. It worked well for us but I wouldn't like one with a door to the landing.

namechangedtoday15 · 28/01/2018 17:18

We extended last year and squeezed in 2 bathrooms (bathroom & ensuite) rather than one big bathroom - have a downstairs loo too.

Parents have just been to stay and they had room with ensuite. My Dad (in his 70s) much prefers having "his own" bathroom without disruption from 3 children and friends last night / this morning it was chaos

MaggieFS · 28/01/2018 17:57

Based on what you've said about top floor and kids, is there a middle floor and other bathroom? Is there another bath? Could you do the two bathroom option, but make one en suite as a guest suite and the other a really decent shower room from the landing? Does it need to have the bath?
