Why won't the heating work if the thermostat is below 27 degrees?!

I'm a warm person and only ever set thermostats to 18-21 degrees. Moved house in December and the boiler will NOT kick in until you turn the thermostat all the way to 27 and hear the click. Whyyy? Our bills are going to be ridiculous!!

Faulty thermostat. But if it clicks in when the dial gets to 27 when does it actually turn off? Because it should turn off when it gets a degree warmer......which wouldn’t actually be 27? Or does it actually keep heating the house until 27?

DragonsAndCakes · 26/01/2018 07:18

It thinks 21 is 27 so just set it there?

Chopsypie · 26/01/2018 07:19

Thermostat fault. Thermostat may think it's warmer than it is. Or is 27 the 'boost' function?

SandLand · 26/01/2018 07:41

Ignore the numbers, is the house the right temperature when the heating is set to "27"? Or is it roasting???

BeautifulLiar · 26/01/2018 08:01

The house definitely isn't roasting!

So what do I do?! Or is it time to call a plumber?

Ignore the numbers, and set it to wherever is comfortable. It's not 27!

Optimist1 · 26/01/2018 09:20

Is it a wireless thermostat? I learned recently that they're battery powered, even though I hadn't replaced batteries in 6 years! (Rooms weren't as warm as I wanted even though thermostat was higher than it had ever been).

BeautifulLiar · 26/01/2018 11:46

But if I set it to 21, it won't come on!!

Erm... It could be battery powered...

OP posts:
SandLand · 26/01/2018 11:54

No, just twist it til the heating comes on. Turn it up a bit more if the house is too cold. Don't worry if it says 30. It clearly isn't.

BeautifulLiar · 26/01/2018 12:52

That's what I do though. And the heating comes on at 27??

OP posts:
MessySurfaces · 26/01/2018 13:55

But does the heating then stay on until the house is really 27?
In any case, a new thermostat is fairly straightforward to sort out, you need a heating person.

BeautifulLiar · 26/01/2018 14:19

I'm not sure... How can I tell it's 27?!

OP posts:
Svalberg · 26/01/2018 14:26

Get a cheap thermometer & put it next to the thermostat.

StopCallingMeShirley · 26/01/2018 14:33

You'd know if your house was at 27c. You'd spend your life wandering round in your undies! Or roasting in more than a thin layer.

Sounds like the thermostat needs replacing.

BeautifulLiar · 26/01/2018 15:40

Ah that's ok then! I'd definitely hate it if it was too hot but it's not at all

OP posts:
HollyBollyBooBoo · 26/01/2018 15:49

But does it matter? If it's never actually getting to 27 can't you just keep it at the level of heat you're comfortable with no matter what number that says on the dial?

Mines the opposite, about 4 degrees cooler than what the actual temp is but it doesn't make any difference to how it heats the house.

BeautifulLiar · 26/01/2018 15:52

No it doesn't matter if the bills aren't too high I guess!

OP posts:
MessySurfaces · 26/01/2018 17:15

Do you have a timer? That's pretty key to the bills being under control...

BeautifulLiar · 26/01/2018 21:54

I don't know how to use the timer :(

OP posts:
Optimist1 · 26/01/2018 22:25

Oh dear, OP - you're on a learning curve with this, aren't you? Your timer will either be a digital setup (a screen with numbers on) or not (a clock-type thing). If the former, I'd suggest you consult the manual or google the boiler type to find operating instructions. The clock-type one is more intuitive - the tiny nobs that surround the dial can be moved in and out to tell the boiler whether it should be on or off and the clock itself should be set to the current time. If there isn't a clock face per se, there'll be an arrow pointing to the edge of the dial. You can turn the dial to put it in the right position.

I've just realised I've started writing a very vague manual here! My best advice would be to get someone to show you how it's done. If you post a picture of the timer I (and other posters, I'm sure) will be happy to give you more accurate instructions.

cestlavielife · 26/01/2018 23:16

Get a clock or similar like this which tells you the room temp. See what the temp actually is when it says 27 on the thermostat.

inappropriateraspberry · 26/01/2018 23:28

Tippex our the numbers and replace 27 with 18 or whatever feels right. Then your thermostat will click at that number not 27! It's prob just the dial out of line with the actual thermostat behind it.
