How much to replace a staircase?

Our staircase is bog standard and nothing wrong with it apart from the fact that it has a banister to the left, then a six inch gap, and then the wall. I was thinking that it would be so much nicer to make the stairs a bit wider and get rid of what is essentially a dirt trap. Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost?

I’m just replacing my staircase, but it is part of a much bigger job so can’t give labour costs on just the staircase. Stairbox have a fab website where you can design and get a quote for a new staircase (the are others but they seem the best value and out chippy recommended them to us).

Depends if you can extend the existing one outwards. Maybe a joiner could do that? A bespoke new staircase is several thousand £.

W had the same set up almost without the top twist.
Left the gap and urs is smaller so more annoying.
Replaced it with one we designed ourselves and partner fitted it.
Oak and glass panels, few 1000 but would have been about 4/6 if got someone in to do it

I think it'll be quite a lot because to get rid of that gap, you will need to replace the entire staircase, not just the banisters. I would guess £1500 or so for a decent bog standard staircase plus labour, more if you want fancy banisters or rails. You may also have to redecorate the hall, and you will need to recarpet - so that could add another £1k.

Thanks everyone - it was just a thought ..... Smile

I wonder if someone can think of something clever that you could do with the gap?! Smile

Just thinking off the top of my head - what about something small but a little bit decorative - like putting some lovely old Victorian tiles down it to add a splash of colour and make it look intentional?

We need to redecorate and replace the carpet so now is the time to make a change. It was the thought of having to sand, fill and paint that small gap that made me think of ways to eliminate it.
