UFH with tiles - are they freezing when heating not on??!

We are having a kitchen diner extension and I have been persuaded by DP to go for ufh with wood effect tiles. Just brought a couple of samples home but they feel freezing just laid on the carpet. Obv they will have heating underneath and insulation but presumably not turned on all the time - do they return to freezing cold without the heat?

Those with wet ufh, how often do you have it on during the day? How is the floor when the heating isn't actually on? What about in summer, do you have to have it on then?

Wondering if we should be reconsidering to wood floor and rads..

We have vast expense of tiles with wet underfloor heating. No they are not freezing ever. Our house is well insulated and a warm house so bear this in mind. Underfloor is a more all over heat than radiators so suits most houses very well and you don’t hide the heating behind curtains! The tiles are fine but insulated underneath them.

Thanks bubbles! They will be in a well insulated area, I was just concerned that without the heating on permanently they would be too cold. What do you do in summer? Do you have it on very low to take the chill off or is it ok without?not used to the thought of having heating in in summer! Thanks.

We have underfloor in kitchen, utility and hall. Radiators in dining area off kitchen. Wasn't overly bothered by ours. Wear slippers anyway so only occasionally noticed it being on. Then it broke. Noticed a huge difference! It definitely helps keeps an nice ambient temperature. Don't have it on in the summer.

My builder describes the kind of heat you get from UFH as "subliminal". It's the perfect way to describe it. You don't actually feel like the tiles are that warm. It's not like walking on white sand in 45 degree heat or anything. There is just this very quiet, comfortable background heat.

Do you keep the heating on in summer to keep tiles warm?

We don't keep ours on in summer - well its set at a room temperature and in summer it never gets low enough to click it on. Tiles never felt cold.

Thanks.
