2 single ovens vs combi? What did you go for?

Just having extension built for our new kitchen diner and am getting round to pricing up appliances. We will have one tall oven housing unit and in my ideal world i would have 2 single ovens in there and a separate microwave. However, space is at a premium and we won't be able to have. A separate micro.... So now i am thinking single oven and a combi? I know the combi lvens don't have as much capacity as a single oven but is it still decent? Or should i stick to 2 singles and sacrifice something else for the micro? Or a double oven and a combi? Probably looking at Neff.

Ime- the combi oven is useful but the microwave is not quite the same as a regular micro and it's annoying.
You have to press a lot of buttons to just get to microwave mode, there's no function to set for 30sec or 2min.
Also there's no turning plate so I don't think anything warms through properly, I find myself turning or mixing stuff halfway.
The digital buttons are a bit temperamental too, a known flaw.
There might be a non-digital option?
Mines neff too.
If I were you I'd see if I could check the functionality properly, not sure if any are plugged in in the shops!

We had the same dilemma but decided on two single ovens and then had the microwave fitted in the utility instead of the kitchen. The main reason was partly because I had not heard great things about combination ovens but also because a friend of mine who had a single oven and a combination said that she regretted not having a separate microwave as when both ovens were in use, like for a big roast dinner, if she wanted to just whizz something in a microwave quickly, she couldn't as the oven was in use so she ended up having to buy a separate microwave as well anyway which takes up space on her work-surface!

I went for 2 single ovens, and then put a proper microwave elsewhere (utility). I have heard a lot of people say that the microwave function on the combi isn't very good on many models.

We went with a microwave that can grill, so it has a turntable, is instantly a microwave but can auto-steam veg too.

I think you need to consider what you use it for. We warm plates in the microwave daily, cook porridge, defrost pancakes, steam veg, cook rice, defrost homemade tomato & veg sauce so we went with the microwave. I have never used the grill function.

It is a whirlpool one and cost more than the oven!

Glad you posted this! We are also in same boat! I'm considering 2 matching single ovens as capacity overall bugger than double. Love the suggestions about microwave in utility as this would solve issue of not having to have a built in microwave!

HouseworkIsAPain · 25/01/2018 14:11

Wouldn’t it make sense to have the second oven in the utility as (I imagine) it would get used less than a microwave? A microwave is for quick stuff, whereas an over you’d probably use the second one to stick a roast in and leave it.

I'm in exactly the same boat. Use the microwave loads for sterilising so don't want to burn out a £500 oven / micro combo, but want a sleek looking kitchen. For those with micro in utility is it a faff?

We went for 2 singles stacked. We looked at a combi but it was cheaper to replace a broken oven AND microwave than it was to replace a combi. We have Bosch btw. All the suppliers told us they were the same company as Neff just with a different badge and a bit cheaper.

Allthebestnamesareused · 25/01/2018 21:27

Our microwave is in the utility room. It's fine. We have 2 singles and a steam oven in the kitchen.

BubblesBuddy · 25/01/2018 21:53

I have a 900 wide single and a 600 wide single. Huge capacity and I love them. I also gave a Neff built in combi. I do not recognise any of the shortcomings above. It is easy to use in any mode. No faff and works well. Set to microwave, set intensity (90-1000) and time (1 second is possible!) then press start!

veuveo · 25/01/2018 23:57

Bubbles- how many times do you have to press the button to get the microwave to start- say set for 1min?

Runningtothesea · 26/01/2018 07:10

I had this dilemma and went for a microwave combi above a single oven....and another cheap microwave in the pantry. I found I used all of them. The kids liked the one in the pantry as it was lower down. However, my combi had a grill and a turntable as well as normal oven function.
I'm now in a new house planning a new kitchen and tempted to go for two singles with a built in regular microwave but like op space is a bit short.

Pastaagain78 · 26/01/2018 07:13

I have two single ovens and a microwave in the utility. It works out great .

parkview094 · 26/01/2018 08:14

I have the same setup as pastaagain. We had originally planned a single oven and a combi, the the cost was crazy vs. 2 single ovens and a separate microwave. With the benefit of hindsight, 2 single ovens and a separate microwave is a much better and more flexible setup imho.
