Hi All,
I wonder if anyone can give any advice?
My husband and i live in a little rented 2 up 2 down house, with our cat and our first baby on the way in approx. 9 weeks :)
Trouble is, we've just been told that there is a water leak on our property and the ground floor of our house needs to be dug up so that the water pipes can be relaid... i just wondered if anyone has any similar experiences? How long might the house be chaotic for? I understand every situation would be different but just ideas. Would our landlord be expected to find alternative accommodation for us and the cat? Would this be cause to be released from our tenancy agreement early? (Ends in August) In the hope we can find another rental and move in before baby gets here. I'm freaking out about bringing baby home to a building site!!

England - if the house is uninhabitable the landlord needs to either release you from the contract or find alternative accommodation for the tenants. (the human ones ) Sensible landlords have insurance that covers the latter.

start talking to the landlord and find out the plan.

To be clear I'm not sure of the exact legal position but the above is what normal landlords do. If you were paying for a house you couldn't live in you could go to environmental health and raise a complaint - so it seems obvious that a landlord must provide something, hence the insurance.
