Moving to York. Help needed finding a house.

We will be relocating due to work.

I have no experience of York and would be really grateful for any input on the area. Are there any areas to avoid? Is it better to live near the centre or are the outskirts better? Both have cars so commute will not be an issue.

Any rightmove suggestions? We are thinking up to £300,000, but will go over that for the right house. We would ideally like 4 bedrooms but would be happy with 3. Seen some nice houses on Rightmove but no idea if they're in a nice area.

We will be ideally going up to York next weekend to have a look around and maybe even view some houses.

Thanks for any help you can offer I really appreciate it.

Hoping somebody might be able to offer advice on York?

Potential House

Just weighing up whether to book into view this house. Am I mad?

Rent first and find out what areas you like and what works for you.

Glenscoconut · 22/01/2018 12:44

That is so simple! Honestly hadn't even crossed my mind, will look into this.

We actually have a relocation budget so we could spend a portion of this renting.

I'm in York. Copmanthorpe is nice but that house is very close to the railway line, which is the East Coast Mainline and therefore could be rather noisy.

York is a fabulous place to live but the traffic can be quite bad at times. Whereabouts are you working? The closer you can live to where you work the better (as anywhere really!).

Do you need to find schools too?

OiOiSausage · 22/01/2018 12:51

Cars don’t mean commuting is not a problem - York traffic is awful. Where will you be working?

whiskyowl · 22/01/2018 12:52

Having lived in York, I agree that being in walking/cycling distance of work is useful. Traffic can be really bad! Plus, there are some beautiful routes along the river that are flat and avoid traffic. I actually LOVED my commute to King's Manor when I lived in Fulford.

BertsLumbago · 22/01/2018 12:56

Whereabouts will you both be working? The traffic into York is frightful so if you live on the right side for your work it might help with the commute.

This thread from a few days ago might be helpful:

Okay this is really good to know! Terrible traffic will be a problem as we will be working fairly central, its near to the Hospital/University. So I think I should look at North York! I will however be travelling to other offices by car or train so we will look near the station too if traffic is a bugger!

I am happy to live central so I think we will take it from there. Maybe look to rent.

No children yet (TTC), so we don't need schools imminently but I hope we will need them in the future so it will be useful to live somewhere and not have to move a few years down the line as I don't want to have to move again.

TranquilityofSolitude Thanks for that thread. Oddly enough we are also relocating from Cambridge! Just having a read through and it has some excellent advice on it.

It can be very busy around the hospital and parking is quite tricky too.

On the upside the station is very easy to get to by bus or by bicycle. York is generally good for cycling - there is a great cycle path along the Ouse, for example.

This is in a good place for access to the hospital/station: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-68026589.html

This might work too:
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-69860351.html
but could be tricky to park 2 cars.

The area around Bishopthorpe Road is very popular:

"Bishy Road" has nice shops/cafes etc.

Fulford is good for schools and, being near the river, it's easy to get into town on foot or by bike on the path by the river.

Hi, I'd second the suggestion about renting. We tried to tie a sale and purchase together when relocating to a totally new area but the purchase fell through. Having gone ahead with the sale and rented for a year, I'm so glad that it did fall through as we got to know the area so much better and by the time we were ready to buy, that wasn't an area we even looked at iyswim

Glenscoconut · 24/01/2018 11:21

TranquilityofSolitude Thank you so much for all that information! It really helps. I love that last house! I've already planned my renovations for it!

Were going to go up this weekend, and we are going to have a stroll around Fulford and visit Bishopthorpe road.

I think we are going to initially rent. My DP is getting cold feet and is worried he won't like it. He's a southerner through and through. I'm originally from the North and I've been desperate to move back for years so I'm hoping this weekend is a success!

You already know this, but your DH is worrying unnecessarily. York is not the north. It's like an outpost of the south in the north. A bit like Harrogate. Sheffield or Leeds would be a totally different story.

MirandaWest · 24/01/2018 12:16

Which university - there are two with one to the south and one nearer to the university.

York is basically the south transplanted into the north so your DH should be fine Smile.

We live in a village just outside York - DH commutes to Wetherby about 30 min away and I work from home which is useful.

Hope you have a good weekend Smile

Glenscoconut · 24/01/2018 13:29

Yes I know that York is not a typical northern city. I grew up in North Yorkshire, on the coast, and York was always seen as posh by my parents. They will think I've made it in life if I live in York Grin

I actually find its very much Cambridge just a smaller version. I'm sure he will be fine. I'm super excited for the weekend.
