Utility Room Ideas

Hi everyone after the best part of a year, work on our extension should be starting next month. Single story wrap around. Very excited as we've been living in house that people take the mickey out of for over 10 years! Anyway, part of the new extension will incorporate a utility room. This makes me very happy! 2.5m by 2.25m approx. Does anyone have any suggestions/images of what i should consider. Def washing machine and tumble dryer (ideally stacked) and large sink. What else should i be considering? Thanks all

Exciting! I'm thinking hanging rail or one of those ceiling mounted airers for mine. Tall broom cupboard or rack if space. I would love a big pantry cupboard but that's because we lack kitchen storage.

A good extractor fan and heating if you want it to function as a place to dry washing.

Can I ask how a wraparound extension works? Do you knock out a whole corner of the house?

wobytide · 18/01/2018 23:01

Extra fridge/freezer space potentially
"Boot room" after muddy walks wth heat from dryer etc being bale to dry wet outerwear and boots

Iluvthe80s · 18/01/2018 23:04

Skyistoohigh thank you. I would like an aired too. And we will have a radiator and window to ensure ventilated. We are knocking down garage, then rebuilding it and behind and then 3 metres out back of house so it's like an upside down L if that makes sense

Wobytide we are lucky to live near lots of country walks so your suggestions hit the nail o the head thank you

I guess a tall cupboard would be good and I was thinking about one of those ironing boards that folds out of a cupboard. I hate our ironing board so much
It's rubbish

I love my utility room. It's about 4m x 1m and has washer, dryer, freezer, extra fridge and sink in it. We have shelves all down one side for extra groceries, tins, BOGOFs, cleaning stuff, cat food etc, then a shoe rack under part of the counter. Also has heated airer (always on!), coat hooks, space for mop bucket, vacuum and ironing board. I think it might be my favourite room.

Starface · 18/01/2018 23:12

I love my utility! Stacked washer dryer (condenser dryer). Heat comes from the immersion tank for megaflow system. Hook on wall for hanging ironing board. Shelf to hold steam generator iron. Extra freezer. Broom cupboard for hoover & steam cleaner etc. Cupboards for cleaning products, food & household supplies eg batteries, lightbulbs. Additional kitchen kit which doesn't fit in the kitchen. Ceiling airer.

If you are going boot room style, I have seen people fit a corner drain (like a wet room) plus a shower head to wash the dog if that is a concern...

Iluvthe80s · 18/01/2018 23:14

Loobylou10 sounds lovely our heated airer is currently in son's room so looking forward to moving that into the utility once it's finished I like the thought of lots of storage and hadn't thought of bogofs! Thank you

Storage is definitely key. I always stock up on things on special offer because I know I've got somewhere to store everything.

Iluvthe80s · 18/01/2018 23:16

Starface sounds lovely is your dryer on top ? And do you have a built in shelf for it ??? We don't have a dog but I've seen those low sinks and they look perfect for pooch owners

Ikea Kallax box shelves with pull out basket - hang them horizontally- great for storing items you don't need every day.

Coat hooks if you have the space? Could hang coats up - or hang up mop, brushes, etc etc so they're out of the way?

Iluvthe80s · 18/01/2018 23:17

Loobylou10 it'll be good to be able to store all those items in one place. I crave an organised home

If you go onto the HOUZZ app or website. I get all my inspiration from there. You can select the room and size you have. It's brilliant... I think I'm addicted to it!

Starface · 18/01/2018 23:26

Yes washer goes on the bottom because of weight. You can buy brackets to out the dryer on (remember to calculate space requirements if you are building cupboards in around it). I got a bracket with a pull out shelf so I can put the washing basket on which is v convenient for the dryer.

I concur with shelves & hooks - I plan to put more hooks in for various activity bags. I just love having masses of space to use as a dumping ground. It's in the utility so I don't need to look at it. There is space for an ironing basket but I don't have to look at it!

BubblesBuddy · 18/01/2018 23:33

Mine has stacked washer and dryer above. Dryer is plumbed into drain. Large hand wash sink with sprayer tap. Wine fridge with work surface over. Open box shelving above that for dried washing. Separate box for everyone plus a few more. On the door wall there is a large towel radiator as you would have in a bathroom. Excellent for drying things you don’t put in the TD.

The other wall (it’s a galley layout) is a work surface with small drawers under. These are for lightbulbs, candles, etc. The space below is open but we have storage for wellies and paper recycling box there. Higher up are cupboards with a hanging rail under which takes shirts or anything you want to hang. At the end is a tall cupboard for mop, cleaning storage, ironing board, iron etc. I can honestly say it works well. I don’t have a fan and it doesn’t need one. It has French doors though for ventilation.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 18/01/2018 23:38

I have worktop in there with a basket on top for each child, I put school uniform, hair bands, brush, baby wipes etc in there so they can get their basket and get ready (in theory!) in the morning.

DilysMoon · 18/01/2018 23:40

Love my utility room. Washing machine, dryer, worktop above where I sort washing once dry. Fitted cupboards - I store medicines, all cleaning and washing products, mini tool box, kids paints, shoe cleaning stock of tissues, handwash, kitchen roll etc. Airer. Also has a radiator, extractor and window. Has a spare shelving unit in an empty corner where I store bits and bobs. Love it, it's freed up so much space in our kitchen.

Iluvthe80s · 19/01/2018 06:39

Bear28 thank you for the tip I'll take a look

Starface thanks for the info on the stacking I'll look into the drawer too. Dh hates tumbler but he doesn't do all the housework. So it's a necessary evil
