Ensuite or walk in wardrobe

So we’re just in the process of buying a house and the master bedroom has a really large cupboard. I can’t decide if it would be better to make it in to a ensuite or a proper walk in wardrobe. It’s located right next to the main bathroom so should be easy to change. It’s a 3 bedroom house and the master bedroom itself isn’t massive so it would be a bit more cramped with lots of wardrobes in. If it makes any difference we are hoping to have more than one child in the future and we’ll probably stay there long term.

Depends just how cramped, but I’d say en suite

Tryingtogetitright · 17/01/2018 20:33

Can you squeeze in both? Maybe a loo and sink rather than a fulk bathroom and a walk in wardrobe?

Tryingtogetitright · 17/01/2018 20:34

full*

buckeejit · 17/01/2018 20:45

How many other toilets in the house & how often are you likely to have Guests staying? We have 4 toilets including en suite-I'd change my en suite to a wardrobe if poss/starting over

RandomUsernameHere · 17/01/2018 20:46

Ensuite definitely for me.

teaandakitkat · 17/01/2018 20:47

Wardrobe. Who wants to be lying in bed and hearing their oh on the toilet in the cupboard?

Thatsnotmycat · 17/01/2018 20:50

I don’t think we could squeeze in both.

There is a toilet downstairs as well, our family live quite close so we don’t tend to have many overnight visitors.

I agree with tea, we’ve had them before and just hate them.

Have a big wardrobe.

LizzieSiddal · 17/01/2018 20:52

X posted. In that case I’d definitely go fir the wardrobe.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 17/01/2018 20:55

I have an ensuite, a bathroom (next to our bedroom) and a loo downstairs. Too many loos to clean. Go for the walk in wardrobe!

Angryosaurus · 17/01/2018 21:13

2 adults 2 teens one bathroom?! En suite!!

BubblesBuddy · 17/01/2018 21:24

En suite. Obviously build walls!!!

Cathster · 17/01/2018 21:27

I have an ensuite, family bathroom and downstairs toilet. If I had the opportunity to change the ensuite to a walk in wardrobe I'd do it in an instant! We rarely use it apart from at night and the master bedroom is quite cramped with our wardrobes.

Joinourclub · 17/01/2018 21:29

Walk in wardrobe. I hate en suites. Especially teeny ones. If I was going to do an en suite is eteal some space from the main bathroom. I'd want the best bathroom for myself!

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 17/01/2018 21:43

Our master bedroom has a walk in shower which the previous owner converted from a large walk in wardrobe. Would that be an option to consider? I'm put off by ensuites by the thought of having to lie in bed listening ( and possibly smelling Shock) DH having a crap. I prefer toilets well away from the bedroom. An extra shower is very useful particularly as the DC get older.

Bluelady · 18/01/2018 00:14

Walk in wardrobe. The popularity of en suites has always been a mystery to me.

verystressedmum · 18/01/2018 00:44

We have an en suite, a main bathroom and toilet downstairs and with 2 teenage dds and a ds we need them!
But we have huge wardrobes so lots of space, if I didn’t have them I might be more inclined to go with the wardrobes.

ooos · 18/01/2018 01:07

Walk in wardrobe and a camping porter loo under your coats Grin

namechangedtoday15 · 18/01/2018 09:08

MN is a bit strange I think on the question of ensuites. Doesn't in my view reflect family life if you have youngish children. We're a family of 5, have a downstairs loo and recently extended to put an ensuite (and extra bedroom in). It's made such a difference to mornings - no less fighting over the shower, cleaning teeth and it's actually quite relaxing (for us as parents) to have our own space at night to have a wash, clean teeth etc.

House rules are key Smile but apart from on MN, if you asked most families whether they'd want 2 bathrooms or 1 bathroom and a fancy wardrobe, I'd say 99% would say extra bathrooms!!

"Who wants to be lying in bed and hearing their oh on the toilet in the cupboard?"

I snorted with laughter.

It's true. I'd have a glorious walk-in wardrobe. But I am the opposite of namechanged in that I can't understand the need for endlessly proliferating bathrooms - we have one, and it's never seemed too little. The fact that DH and I don't have children probably has something to do wtih this, though! Grin

Thatsnotmycat · 18/01/2018 09:42

Oh god I’m so torn! Good reasons for both options.

In your situation I think I'd probably go for the wardrobe as you will have to have some kind of storage - and a cramped bedroom with a small en-suite would be like living in a flat.

Is there any potential for turning your downstairs loo into a wet room in the long term for teenagers/guests?

namechangedtoday15 · 18/01/2018 11:55

OP maybe post what dimensions of room are?

FluffyWuffy100 · 18/01/2018 11:58

Wardrobe. Who wants to be lying in bed and hearing their oh on the toilet in the cupboard?

This.

a 2 bathroom house for 3 bed when you already have a downstairs WC seems out of proportion when you say the room isn't massive anyway.,

FluffyWuffy100 · 18/01/2018 12:01

And if you have two children and stay in the house - in 10 or 15 years time you can change your mind and put in an en-suite if that is what will suit you then.
