Anyone got a small slipper bath? Comfy or not?

I'm trying to work out a layout for our future ensuite. Looks like only way to get a bath in (as well as decent size separate shower) is to have a 1500 length slipper bath, a bit like this one

I like the look of them. However I've never been in a slipper bath. I don't have an issue with bathing more sitting up rather than lying down but just wondered if they are comfy. Especially since I am 5'3 and DH is 6'3 so we are quite different sizes!

Any info please?

I suspect that it would be hardly used. If you really like a long bath, you'd want to lie down, if you want to get clean you'd use the shower?

I'd go for really big walk in shower, or shower over bath (which I personally think is great use of space & dont see what people have against them)

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 15/01/2018 21:17

I had a 1500 bath in my tiny flat as that was the width of the room! We still had to cut holes in the wall to get it to fit.

I'm 5'9" and fat. It was a P shape bath, very deep and as good as I could get.

Those slipper baths look nice and deep, but I'd pop into a shop and try to find a similar one, and sit in it. That's how I picked mine (bought from Victoria Plumb).

They don't think you're mad, honest!

BunloafAndCrumpets · 15/01/2018 21:19

I had a bath in one in a hotel. I didn't find it very relaxing but it was better than no bath. The thing I didn't like (maybe TMI) was that my boobs felt unsupported because I was upright and the bath wasn't that deep. It didn't feel like a proper bath for that reason!

I'm tall tho (5'10).

munchkinmaster · 15/01/2018 21:20

Sat in a lot of baths when we did out bathroom. —Used to pop the toddler in like a wee play pen too—

emwithme · 15/01/2018 21:22

We have one (not that exact one but a claw footed one from Bathstore, think it's called the Salisbury) and I LOVE it.

What it loses in length, it makes up for in depth. If I sit up with my bum right at the back, my feet are just short of the other end (I'm 5 ft 6.5) but if I lay down, I can get my nipples and my knees underwater at the same time.

It's fabulous to laze in and read and wide enough around the rim for the cats to walk around and shout at me for wantonly disobeying their orders to avoid the water

PigletJohn · 15/01/2018 22:33

Do you mean you have a wall-to-wall gap, for the bath, only 1500mm long?

You can get an ordinary bath-shaped bath to fit.

IMO a short bath needs to be quite deep so you can submerge all parts of your body (possibly in turns)

What are the dimensions of your bath space?

LizzieSiddal · 15/01/2018 22:36

I think it depends how tall you are.
I’m 5ft 2 and love a small bath. With the normal sized ones I can’t lie down as my legs dont reach the other end.

HannaSolo · 15/01/2018 22:43

My MIL has one. I'm average height.

I don't like it tbh.

Yes they are deep but you still end up with loads of your body out of the water.

I really like to wallow in the bath with just my face peaking out above the water Grin.

If that doesn't bother you it's probably ok but you definitely need to get a shower attachment as washing your hair in one without involves either sticking your legs akimbo out of the bath (not v dignified) or practicing contortionist style positioning.

Regressionconfession · 15/01/2018 22:56

I've had a 1400 cm bath and LOVED it!!! You could wedge yourself in with your feet at the bottom whereas in longer baths I always feel like I'm slipping down or floating away. It was deep enough to cover me in water up to my shoulders. Just redoing our bathroom and will be getting another even though we have space for bigger.

minipie · 16/01/2018 14:10

Thanks for the replies!

Yes we would have a separate large walk in shower for daily washing.

We use a bath more for having a laze, maybe reading a book. Not really to wash! So occasional use but nice to have if we can. There would be a full size bath in the other bathroom (for the DC).

That means the practicalities of hair washing aren't a big deal. I don't mind not being able to lie down - I wouldn't want cold boobs though...

I'm not shy about getting in baths in showrooms Grin thanks for the bathstore tip, we have one near so that will be my first stop to try them out in the flesh.

PigletJohn we can have a layout which has a 1550 gap between the side of the basin unit and side of shower - so not a wall to wall gap exactly but similar. The 1500 bath would fit in that gap, either along the wall or at an angle depending on what looks best. I had a 1650 normal bath in a previous flat (had to chip off plaster to get it in) and it was ok for me but not great for DH. I was hoping a slipper bath would be better than that due to being deeper?

Or I've also found some 1500 baths which are not slipper style, but are similarly extra deep and wide to compensate for the shortness. Eg the ios bath by victoria + albert.

Regression that sounds promising!

Meant to say yes comfy

minipie · 16/01/2018 14:35

Thank you!! How long is yours do you know? And do the tall DH/DSs find it comfy?

Carron is a good UK maker, they make an unusually wide range of sizes. I think mine is a Quantum, it is deeper than usual and doesn't have much slope at the head or sides (so takes quite a bit of water unless you are portly), it was to replave an old Imperial size not easy to find.

They make "Carronite" versions which are extra-thick (and more expensive) and are heavy, rigid, and hold the heat better.

Worth a look

I just wouldn’t wedge a bath into a small space. Sometimes luxury is having space to move around! I would get a very long shower (1600 mm) and get the best tiles and taps you can afford. Also the biggest towel radiator you can fit in when you exit the shower. You have another bath. Use that if you need a wallow! I do have a bath in my en suite and it’s quite a bit bath. We don’t use it much. We have a large en suite and it’s not shoehorned in. Cleaning a bathroom is much easier if you have space!

specialsubject · 16/01/2018 17:35

Definitely try, this will be a style over function job and may give you instant backache. Also good luck with all the extra cleaning if it isn't built in.

minipie · 16/01/2018 17:50

Hmm food for thought. Bubbles that's exactly our dilemma, extra space vs bath. There would still be enough space I think even with it, but obviously more without.

Trouble is the other bathroom is likely to be occupied by bath toys (and in later years teenage stuff) so not such a lovely place for a calm soak... First world problem I know!

special yes, I agree, trying in the flesh may solve the issue. If it isn't comfy there is no point.

OP posts:
minipie · 16/01/2018 17:52

PS Bubbles we are planning a 2m shower!! Unfortunately due to the shape of the bathroom (2m wide), reducing the shower wouldn't free up more usable space. Towel rail going at the non wet end of the shower

Allthebestnamesareused · 16/01/2018 19:32

Yes the tall boys find it comfy and even take their revision in!

Ours (pictures above) is a 1500mm. Can't remember which make but it was from Ridgeons. I will look out receipts Thursday to see which brand if I remember.

HisBetterHalf · 16/01/2018 19:43

Love mine, really comfy

TeddyBee · 16/01/2018 19:55

We had one, the Salisbury I think, and it was very comfy and deep. I am 5’2” and loved it, but 5’10” DH wasn’t a fan.

Mumsnut · 16/01/2018 20:05

I've got this one

www.ravak.com/en/bathtub-avocado

It is very, very comfy

Most long baths have a fairly vertical end, so i find them uncomfortable: either my neck is kinked, or my torso is unsupported.

I'd rather sit up in my avocado.

BubblesBuddy · 16/01/2018 20:23

I think 1600 is a minimum for a luxury shower so 2m is good. Bath will look like a toy next to it. If you cannot have a proper bath, go for space. You need storage in your main bathroom so you can de clutter. Lots of people have just a shower in the en suite because they use that way more than the bath.

minipie · 17/01/2018 10:19

There is other space available for storage Bubbles. You're right the bath will look dinky next to shower... not sure if that is a problem. Shower is a slice off one end of the room iyswim so maybe the size comparison not so obvious.
