Installing a new door from hallway into garage?

Anyone know roughly how much this costs?

Googling seems to bring just installation of doors into existing doorways but we'll need someone to knock a hole and fit the door.

Anyone had this done?

Probably a load bearing wall and a few bits of electrics will need shifting. It's from the hallway into the garage.

We're in Yorkshire and happy if anyone can recommend a company :)

Thanks in advance!

Watching with interest as I'd like to put in an internal door.

Ours was about £1200 about 5 years ago I think. There or thereabouts. Included creating the hole, frame etc, moving house alarm electrics, plastering and obviously supplying and fitting the door which had to be a fire door to satisfy building regs.

Worth every penny as I use it numerous times every day as we have a larger fridge, a chest freezer and the washing machine and tumble dryer at the back of the garage, not to mention a kind of make shift pantry with food, household items etc. Really wouldn't have wanted to go out the house to the garage door every time I needed something from the garage!

Thanks @MyBalletShoes that sounds exactly like my setup.

Can't wait to have an extra freezer!! GrinGrin

No worried! Hope you manage to get one sorted without too much hassle or without it costing too much. It certainly makes life easier!

Hiya we are in process of buying a house and have been a rough idea of quote from two separate builders who jabe both said around £400-500 depending on our choice of door/handle etc

flyingallison · 20/02/2018 10:57

*have
Neither have visited house but both aware it needs to be fire door and both aware that a light switch and socket will need to be moved

We’ve just had this done and it cost £500 (we’re in the SE). It’s part of a planned garage conversion so we didn’t need a fire door.

Vickym83 · 23/02/2020 14:09

Bellamoo sorry I know it’s been ages but how much did the whole garage conversion cost I’m thinking of doing the same and making a new room

I'd love to know how things worked out for all on here. We are hoping to get this job done once people are allowed to start moving back to work as we're ttc and will need the extra room.

I know the original thread is from 2018 but it has been resurrected recently.

I have always found building sheriff very good for guestimating building works. This is the one for the garage door knock-through.

buildingsheriff.com/Knock-Through-Doorway.php

We did a garage conversion but 10 years ago so not so up to date price wise. Best thing we ever did. Knocked through from the hall and retained a section across the back of the width of the garage with a door into it for storage. It is the children's playroom.

10 years on, it has desks for homework, and storage for coats, bags, games, toys etc.

jessthefletch1 · 02/04/2020 21:58

Thanks for responding, Montys. We've been trying to decide whether to extend off the kitchen, convert the garage or put a dormer on the upstairs to give us more space. It's doing my head in that I can't decide: my anxiety about everything else that's going on with the world is definitely finding a home with my home situ.

jessthefletch1 · 02/04/2020 22:06

And I think we have settled on the garage but then I keep considering all the other options 🤦‍♀️. Your comment about it being the best thing you've had done has reminded me that our garage conversion idea is probably the best (and cheapest) idea in the long run.

Ours was between £1000 and £1500. Watch outs are mostly as people have already mentioned. Ours had to be a fire door, which means regs need to be followed with fire resistant foam (and seals?) round the edge. We found it a bit faffy ensuring that the closing mechanism, hinges, etc were all suitable, but the right tradesperson can help I'm sure. We also had someone out from the council to check we'd followed building regs.

The best thing is we can keep the beer out in the garage and it's usually a perfect cellar temp!! We make much better use of our garage now too.
