Hiiii!!
New Mum here worrying about the world!
Not sure if right place to post but...
I have my Nans old wardrobes which are white (or were!) they are very old, but lovely three piece unit, would love to make them whiter and possibly use in the nursery for new baby, as I won't part with them and will also free up room/save some money. I know my nan would of been very happy to see this also :)
Any ideas of improving them?
The white is not like painted (it's a bit like chip board?!) so don't think sanding is an option.
Thanks for reading, if it made any sense at all! 😂 x

Can you post a picture? If sanding isn't an option due to texture, I would give them a good dust off and wipe down, and then paint a coat of primer and then just paint over, add in some new handles and you're good to go. I would strongly advise to secure them well to the wall though to keep little one safe.

Thanks kat!
Not at home but if I remember will post picture!
They are very Good sturdy units which she has had as long as my mum can remember (she is 53!) just need a bit of tlc.
Sure the bf could make some brackets to fix them to wall :)
Thank you! X

That looks like a really useful unit, loads of room. I would take the handles off, and any other metal bits, take the doors off the hinges etc and then just clean, prime and paint! Have fun :)

You could even wallpaper them, or just paint them again. Nice solid pieces!

BlackPeppercorn · 09/01/2018 14:40

I think they are what used to be called melamine and I believe you can get a specific primer, then use whatever colour paint you like. But white is a good nursery colour anyway.
You could change the handles. Stencil some suitable decoration on. Convert one side to slide out baskets.
Once you have a toddler, they will need fixing to the wall.

IndigoMoonFlower · 09/01/2018 14:54

Oh if they are melamine then you need to buy a tin of ESP primer from a hardware shop or no paint will work.

OP this is the stuff: www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/esp-easy-surface-prep/
It's quite pricey, but worth it as furniture looks solid. You can also use this stuff on tiles and loads of surfaces where you can't normally get paint to stick.

Such good advice
Thanks so much x
