Remove a sink from a utility room?

We are doing our kitchen and utility at some point this year. There is a big sink in the kitchen and a smaller sink in the utility room which at the moment houses a washing machine and tumble dryer side by side and slightly further down said small sink with a worktop over both. My thoughts are to put in a large free standing fridge/freezer where the WM and TD are and then move the WM/TD down to where the sink/worktop currently is, leaving the utility room without a sink. The pressure has always been rubbish so we’ve rarely used the tap itself. Would it bother you to have no sink or tap in a utility room?

No. We don't have one. Guess it depends how far from another sink you are. (Ours is just off the bathroom so not a problem.)

Our utility is right next door to the kitchen, only separated by an arch?

A utility sink is the best.

Could you stack the tumble drier and washing machine and still have space for a sink? I would want one but if you aren't planning to sell in the next 5 years I wouldn't worry about keeping a sink if you never use it.

WidowTwonky · 03/01/2018 11:31

I’d keep the utility sink

MiniCooperLover · 03/01/2018 11:42

Yes stacking would potentially work though it would mean a much smaller fridge and ideally we wanted a decent size. No plans to sell at all but I’ll look at trying to reconfigure to start it all in. We are limited by a waste pipe that is boxed in which cuts off some space. I’ll have to see if we can improve the tap pressure, it just spurts everywhere right now which is why I wouldn’t miss it (as I don’t use it) but I can see why people like the sink.

I'm looking at getting a counter top sink to go on top of our washing machine/ tumble dryer - means the counter is set a little higher for the pipes (but you might be able to avoid this if you have deeper counter tops with space behind your washing machine) - this might work for you

We don’t have a sink in the utility room, although there is a loo with sink just off it so I use that for steeping stains and things like that. It’s actually easier I find to have a flat worktop minus sink for folding/organising.

I never thought about having a sink in the utility until I read about it on here. If you have another sink nearby I wouldn’t bother but having the kitchen sink only downstairs would be horrible. (I’m thinking washing dog bowls, muddy boots etc)

dazzlingdeborahrose · 03/01/2018 16:39

Wev just pulled out our old utility and replaced it. Old utility had sink which was rarely used and took up space. New utility has no sink and it's fab. We now have wager, deter, freezer in there as well as a tall cupboard, loads of storage for dog food and cleaning products. We have a cupboard next to washer for laundry baskets. Everything's behind doors and it looks so neat and tidy. Never needed a sink in the utility in our last house. Don't regret ripping the sink out of this one.

Tobuyornot99 · 03/01/2018 16:48

I don't have a sink, much prefer a clear run of work top for folding clothes etc.
I have an outside hose pipe for anything especially grubby to be washed down, have never missed a sink for washing dogs / football kit tletc that are often mentioned here.

FluffyWuffy100 · 03/01/2018 16:52

I prefer a sink if possible but not essential. Can you get a counter top one?

SkyIsTooHigh · 03/01/2018 17:20

Yes I use our utility sink all the time for cat litter trays, mud/sicked on laundry, clean up after decorating.

If you do it up as you want then having a washing machine there tells buyers there's already cold water plumbed in, at least. A counter top sink would say there's hot too, and it's easily switched back to a bigger sink with loss of the FF if buyers want. Do what works for you.

This looks rather amazing but pricey and a bit tiny 😊

We removed it.

If I need to wash up after painting or anything muddy I fill plastic tubs in the bath and use those. I have a large one, bigger than a sink that we use for anything that needs soaking.

I empty it into an outside drain or onto a part of the garden where I have previously tipped out water that cannot go into a drain (washing grout bucket etc.)

When I lived with my parents they only had one sink and the cat bowls etc were all washed up in that followed by disinfectant.

Do what works for you. My utility contains the washing machine and tumble dryer, clearly there is plumbing there and when we go to sell we will point out the hot and cold water feeds. Do what works for you.
