Sounds ok to me. I think bathrooms are around £5-8k excl materials where I am (SE).

Clayhead · 30/12/2017 12:45

Would be considered very good value round here.

Wishingandwaiting · 30/12/2017 12:49

South east here too

For my basic bathroom and local handyman around £1,000, Midlands.

Viviennemary · 30/12/2017 13:14

That sounds fine to me too. Quite reasonable really considering extras.

19lottie82 · 30/12/2017 14:30

I bought all my bathroom materials from soak.com for around £1200, then tiles from homebase for £400 and a local builder fitted the whole lot for £1500.

Less than half the price of a local all in bathroom company.

bookgirl1982 · 30/12/2017 14:34

That's a top end price for mid-range products. What bath, screen and towel rail? We're paying about 5k for the same sort of job in a couple of months.

DropZoneOne · 30/12/2017 14:38

I paid similar from Wickes this year, included underfloor heating, shower pump and full tiling. I did negotiate £500 off their original quote. Tiles was another £800.

If that's with a big company it sounds fine. If it's an independent fitter then it sounds a lot - I know I paid around £1.5k more for using Wickes to fit than getting my own fitter in, but it was peace of mind. (We had issues with the fitting but Wickes have agreed all remedial work)

GinisLife · 30/12/2017 14:44

If it's from a bathroom company then it sounds about right. I had a quote for similar but then I bought all my stuff from Victoria Plum on line and a local guy fitted it. Cost approx £5k including an expensive floor

EmmaC78 · 30/12/2017 19:27

It does sound slightly on the expensive side to me too.

greendale17 · 30/12/2017 19:35

Too expensive to me

Wishingandwaiting · 30/12/2017 20:07

£4300 for labour. Just him and his partner (they come exceptionally highly recommended from close friends. I have seen their work, it’s exceptional.)

And then £3150 materials.

Reckons 7-9 workout days.

The existing bath is encased in tiling, which he and another builder said would extend the job from normal expected duration for a bathroom.

Thoughts?

I trust this man. He is meticulous, thoughtful. A real craftsman. So I will be going with him. The question is whether his quote in the the ball park of acceptable. I’m fine with it being on the upper end because of the peace of mind I have in him but I don’t want it to be ridiculous.

We are in the south east, just outside of London.

Oh sorry

Materials are £2800
Skip hire is £270

Sounds about right to me

bookgirl1982 · 30/12/2017 20:17

They're not overcharging on the materials, but the labour seems high. Our fitter works on his own and brings in a plasterer and electrician as part of his fee. His labour charge is just over £2k all in for a bathroom, 6 working days.

Fintress · 30/12/2017 20:21

Sounds about right to me. When we got ours fitted we were told that once you’ve chosen your fittings tiles etc you can practically double the cost with labour included. We got a company to design and install ours to our specification and although pricey they did a fantastic job. It took about 10 days as there was a lot of work.

Wishingandwaiting · 30/12/2017 20:44

Yes I think it’s about right.

Thanks for feedback

I can’t bloody wait!!!

Sounds right to me too! We have a quote of £2700 for fitting, and we're looking at spending around £3k on materials. But we're in the SW, and I'm getting mates rates from the builders as used to work there/am friends with the owner.

Can I be nosy and ask for links to the products you're buying? Although we're booked in for February, we can't decide on what to get for our family bathroom, which is 2.5m x 2m. I keep going round in circles Sad

Wishingandwaiting · 01/01/2018 08:08

Builder came around yesterday afternoon. Such a good guy. Some really good ideas, and I’ve managed to shave off £500

Going rogue... aqualisa, roca and groehl- those are the brands I’m going for

didireallysaythat · 01/01/2018 10:09

The day rate is £230-300 (unless I've missed something). That's quite high - it's what we pay for a plumber but double what we pay for a builder (in SE). But peace of mind is worth something for sure

BarbieV7 · 15/01/2018 14:34

Oh my goodness can you please pass over the details of this angel of a man? I am looking to start works in the next 6-10 months so I wouldn't be in your way HaloGrin

whiskyowl · 15/01/2018 14:56

I think that sounds very decent indeed for a good fitter. It's all in the fitting this kind of thing.
