Remove electric fireplace and surround/mantel

Desperately need some advice.

Our house which we just bought has electric fireplace with stone mantel (surround) and stone hearth. Even thought they look lovely, it's not something we want and also currently we have no place to put the TV. So in short we want to remove the whole thing and plaster up the hole.

I've been doing some reading online but still unsure of what exactly we need to do? Do we need to worry about the chimney, ventilation or damp issues here? I'm guessing not as the chimney must have been blocked off years ago before they put the electric fire in.

Some guidance is much appreciated, the more details the better. Also do you think this will be a big job can I handyman do it (he's a diy enthusiast, family's friend)or shall we try to get a builder in what is the approximate cost of getting builders for this?

Also I tried to use a small piece of metal to knock on the stone mantel yesterday and can see scratches. Not sure what material is it made of. Maybe limestone.

Is there definitely a chimney? Sometimes electric suites are just hung on the wall. Any chance of a picture?

Hi Barbara - there's definitely a chimney. Can see the chimney from outside. Also the wall is budging out and before the electric fire they used to have the gas fire there. Picture attached.
