Timber frame and architect

Hi,
We are wanted to have a timber framed extension ( think border oak style), however I am not sure what is the best way to go about this do you use an independent architect and design what you want and then go to the timber frame companies for a price? Or do you have to use an architect from one of the timber frame companies? I.e how do you know the timber frame companies can build your design if you go with an independent architect?

If you have atimber frame what did you do?

Just typed out a long post and lost it! The short answer is you can do both although I'd recommend going straight to a few specialist timber frame companies for a quote for design and build.

We're in the middle of a timber frame extension right now and it's going really well (despite the stress of managing all other trades ourselves). I'm so glad we didn't opt for block/brick.

A few questions. Where in the country are you, what is your house access like (to the garden) and how wide is your road? The delivery truck carrying the frame is mahoosive so it needs to be wide enough.

Meant to add, I can recommend a couple of timber frame companies but it depends what region you're in.

If you want an oak frame extension, the specialist companies have their own architects. We have a large oak frame orangery and front lobby/porch and they designed both for us. PP was also done by them. You could get any architect to do it but finding a builder may be more problematic. The oak frame companies have their own builders to put the foundations in and put the building up. It’s much easier to use a specialist company. None of them are cheap!

We are on a narrow bridleway with enough width for a Range Rover. You need a delivery site nearby and ability to ferry the oak to your house. It is put together on site and no component is massive.

Ooh thanks for the replies. We are in Shropshire. Access ok I think. Will contact some oak framed companies.
