Walk in wardrobe or fitted

Our bedroom is quite spacious approx 12’ x16, do we convert one end of the room into a walk in wardrobe which would measure about 12’x 5’ with a window. Leaving bedroom 10’6 x 12
Or just go for a wall of fitted wardrobes.
On attraction of the fitted wardrobes is that would be against the party wall with our noisy neighbours,

When you say walk-in wardrobe do you mean an American-style walk in closet with a door, and clothes rails and shelving etc. inside? So, almost like a separate room within your bedroom?
Whichever you choose you would create a buffer between you and the noisy neighbours?

Have you had quotes for both a walk in wardrobe and fitted wardrobes?
I think if you choose a walk-in closet then you could get a local builder to do the work. If it's fitted wardrobes then you're better of going to a specialist company, especially if you'd like special pull out shelves for shoes, etc.

Yes thinking of American style walk in with shelves and rails and probably double doors onto bedroom. But yes a room within a room.
No quotes yet. Still at thinking stage!

I guess it depends on the style you prefer. If you have wall to wall fitted wardrobes then it will look like you have a huge wardrobe at the end of your bedroom. An American style walk-in closet is a little more discreet I think. You'll have a room within a room. So it will look like there is another room leading off your bedroom. Friends of ours have a walk-in wardrobe and I was pleasantly surprised about the masses of storage space they have.
Personally I don't think wardrobes are particularly attractive looking, unless they're antique and/or quirky. I think I'd prefer the walk-in closet. They're great for storing loads of other things too.

But walk in wardrobes do take up more floor space than fitted for the same amount of storage - so depends if you are happier with a a smaller bedroom.

You can always put up a large mirror in the bedroom to make the room look bigger. It depends how much other furniture you will want to put in your bedroom apart from a bed, bedside tables maybe, a chest of drawers/dressing table, ....

I was actually only thinking of the bed which is super king and bedside tables which have drawers

In that case I'd go for a walk-in closet. I like them because they don't look like wardrobes and they provide great storage space. But that's my own personal preference because I don't particularly like the look of wardrobes unless they are a feature in the room.

I’d prefer walk in wardrobe - so much better looking and you don’t disturb/get disturbed when getting ready if you get up or go to bed at different times.

Jumping on this thread as we are looking at doing something similar. We are looking at adding a walk in wardrobe at the end of our long bedroom, partitioned off with a stud wall.
Would you just install shelves and rails or wardrobe carcasses without the doors?

Baxdream · 24/12/2017 09:47

We're putting a walk in wardrobe in ours, although ours is a big room.
For me being able to get up without disturbing hubby is the selling point.

I don’t think 5’ or 1.5m is deep enough for a walk-in room. Especially if you account for the thickness of walls in addition. Even if it’s 1.5m x 3.6m (or 12’), it’ll be a very awkward space and it would leave your bedroom quite a lot smaller. I doubt it would give you any extra storage as you’d only have room for a rail and shelves along the long wall so exactly the same as a fitted wardrobe.

So I would go with fitted wardrobes in this case.
