i was hoping for an opinion from folks in the south west.I keep hearing about how unfriendly the cornish are to outsiders. But in my humble experience this just isnt the case.Ill be as brief as possible,im from birmingham born and bred so my accent down south stands out like a sore thumb.i left the army in 2002 and lived in cornwall for about 2 years,i lived in redruth then newquay for a while .i never once had any trouble or comments or anything negative towards me at anytime.the people i met along the way were nice people,i still think about them today.my brother has a similar opinion as he stayed in cornwall in the 90s but only for six months.can anyone help me with this as i just dont understand the things people say about the cornish, thanks.

I think if you use your upcountry money to buy in an area where there is a lot of local resentment about incomers driving high property prices, you might well find yourself made unwelcome by locals. Whereas if you live in an ordinary house in an “ordinary” (less touristy) town (eg Newquay, Redruth, Bodmin etc) you will probably be fine. A lot of people don’t realise the level of poverty in Cornwall - it is the most deprived county in England and one of the more deprived regions in the whole of the EU.

Agree with pp. if you buy a "second home" type property in a touristy town - even as your main home - you're likely to be seen as a "blow in". But if you go for a more ordinary town - probably inland, like liskeard, Bodmin, Redruth, then you're more likely to be accepted.
Have a look at lostwothiel!

I'm Cornish. Born and Bred. Live in Penzance just 10 miles from LandsEnd.
I love the town I live and work in, people are so friendly.
Take a leap! It's beautiful here xx

thanks for the advice,as i said in my previous i hear people talking about how unfreindly the cornish are and it does get my back up a bit to be honest, purely because of my experiences in cornwall.maybe some cornish are unfriendly but not the ones i met.A certain type of person will always find something to hate or resent, but thats anywhere.

Cos you're an emmet!!!

Kidding. Penzance born and very homesick here. I'm in Plymouth now and find the janners much more insular than the Cornish who are quite chilled and live and let live.

Think it depends where you go - padstow and that coast probably sick of being exploited by the yahs abs rahs. Newquay folk probably sick of drunk students.

If you move to the more functional towns - Truro or Falmouth or Penzance etc there's not much to resent....

north100 · 24/12/2017 19:45

yes im an emmet!! i went to plymouth only once, not for long but it was a bit to busy for me,to much like birmingham.i loved newquay ide move back down in a heart beat.

Another Penzance born here, as long as you're aware how bleak it can all be in winter and you aren't going down as a tourist but to live and work, you'll be fine.

north100 · 24/12/2017 19:54

i like the sound of penzance,my plan is to move down in the next 5 years,im a lorry driver for a living so i would try and sort a job before making the jump,i know a farmer up here who knows a couple of farmers down south so thats an option.
