Large U.K. university city.
Fab flat but NO parking, no possibility of permits .

My friend who is considering this doesn’t have or need a car but has long term resale value in mind.

. It’s close to all v good public transport links .
Your thoughts please

Depends on if it is normal for that area and development.

If some flats in the block have spaces but that flat doesn’t, it will be cheaper and probably take longer to sell.

putdownyourphone · 20/12/2017 20:55

Is it Brighton per chance? If so there’s barely any parking anywhere anyway so it’s pretty standard for that area.

I own and live in such a flat. If I can't get somewhere by tube/bus then I'd get a cab. Never been a major drama for me but I have everything on the doorstep and no kids to cart about.

Pigwitch · 20/12/2017 20:56

Well I would because I don't drive. If it's city centre I imagine most people will use public transport?

Thatsnotmycat · 20/12/2017 21:17

Is there anywhere for visitors to park like a nearby carpark?

Twickerhun · 20/12/2017 21:19

We live in a similar property (house not flat) in a busy central location. It’s a bloody brilliantly place to live and we don’t need a car due to excellent public transport/waking options. The city we live in is great for being car less and there is a lot of demand on property - this would not be true everywhere

JoJoSM2 · 20/12/2017 22:12

I had such a flat in London. You could buy a parking space but barely anyone in the block had a car. If someone fancied driving somewhere, there was a car scheme whereby you could rent a car by the hour and there were a few of them about (I never needed to use it anyway). Resale wasn't a problem at all.

pinkginanyone · 20/12/2017 22:19

Yep, who needs a car in the city. I’f it’s the right flat apart from that I’d jump at the chance.

OliviaStabler · 20/12/2017 22:21

Depends on the city. London is a Yes, Exeter is a huge No.

AntiHop · 20/12/2017 22:23

I live in one! You can hire a parking space but we've never wanted to own a car. We can get visitor permits for contractors or friends driving to us.

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/12/2017 22:30

It depends;
We lived in York in such a flat. All local parking was permit so we had to park in paid parking or risk tickets. It was a nuisance as public transport couldn't support our jobs.
In London I don't think it would bother me as good public transport also the possibility of paid parking.

Viviennemary · 20/12/2017 22:34

If it's a place where you can easily manage without a car I'd say fine. If not then there's a problem.

KanielOutis · 20/12/2017 22:49

I live in a city centre flat with no parking. It’s no more a pain than the outer suburbs housing nearby that also have no parking. The convenience of being central is great.

Foobarjar · 20/12/2017 22:51

Permits are normal lots of places. Depends if there is enough parking or a fight for spaces come 5pm.

If I didn't drive but it was normal for the city to drive eg not London. Then I'd be concerned about saleability after I'd outgrown it.

bobbicream · 20/12/2017 23:02

We have a flat in Clerkenwell (central London) and there aren't any parking spaces allocated for the block. We don't drive for environmental reasons and it's been no issue for us - the public transport here is great, plus there is Uber and services like Deliveroo and Ocado for shopping. We have one DC and it's fine taking him on the tube and buses. The only issue that sometimes comes up is that my parents have nowhere specific to park when they come to visit (we can get visitor permits but the street is small so sometimes there are literally no spaces) and things like tradesmen and larger deliveries can get awkward as they don't want to pay for parking and get restless looking out for traffic wardens. We're not concerned about resale value - our street is sought-after because of the area and schools.

Great responses thank you all.
It’s in Glasgow but not right in the centre .
Nearest car park is about a mile away and nearest v expensive metered parking is slightly closer.
Bus routes about half a mile away

How many visitors does she have with cars?

Ellboo · 23/12/2017 13:33

For Glasgow tenement living that’s fairly normal. The joy of living in the city centre is not needing to own a car!

PotteringAlong · 23/12/2017 13:33

Glasgow and not in the city centre? Not a chance.

PotteringAlong · 23/12/2017 13:35

If it was in the city centre that would be different.

mollyblack · 23/12/2017 13:39

Depends on the area but I would not expect a city centre flat to have parking. When i lived in town i didn't need a car.

phoenix1973 · 23/12/2017 13:41

No. Even if I sold my car, where would my visitors park?
I've family with under 3's who would need a space nearby.plus disabled mil.

JoJoSM2 · 23/12/2017 22:07

Half a mile from a bus and not allowed a car? No chance.

tumblrpigeon · 24/12/2017 13:05

Thanks again everyone.
Not sure we have a consensus !
