To kitchen diner or not kitchen diner?

Demolished old kitchen diner and rebuilding bigger/two storey extension.

We have a sep dining room we’ve always used rather than the kitchen table. We did use the old kitchen table for breakfast sometimes.

Whenever I mention not having a table in new kitchen people seem to think it’s a terrible idea

Am I mad to not have a table in new kitchen? We will have high seating at the island and either a built in bench or sofas.

(There’s no option to knock through existing dining room due to layout but I wouldn’t want to as prefer the sep room).

Do what you want - for how you live - if there is an option for others to knock thru if you sell then thats a bonus.

I agree, unless you're doing it up to sell, do what works for how you live.

A separate dining room for us is wasted, we always turn it into another living room, as we never have formal dinner parties, and we eat in the kitchen and our dinner guests mates are happy to also. Our island can sit nine at a squeeze, six very comfortably.

However we are not you and it's your home. If you prefer eating in a dining room, then go for it.

I ought to add there will be room to put a table in the new kitchen if we change our mind/decide to sell so it wouldn’t mean knocking any walls down.

I’m struggling to visualise what to do with it full stop to be fair. I loved my old kitchen diner and it’s layout but this is a fair bit bigger and it won’t work in the same way

We also have a separate dining room and wouldn’t ever host in the kitchen.

However, we do have a table in the kitchen- we use that for breakfast and sometimes for quick mid-week suppers. Personally, not a fan of bar stools either as they tend to be less comfy + islands don’t seem to be designed for people to face each other and chat over a meal - only good for a quick, solitary scoff really.

We have a circular table built into the end of the kitchen island and use it all the time. Friends have a drink there whilst I am cooking. It’s convivial. We have opened our kitchen up into the lounge next door and have a table at the end of the lounge looking over the garden. We tend to eat at that table now when we have guests because it’s a great space. The formal dining room is now under used but looks great at Christmas.

I would never go without an eating area in the kitchen and we love the circular table. Sitting in a line at a breakfast bar is not so good in my view. Chatting isn’t so easy.
