Curious about Hampton/Hampton Hill

Hi there - we are thinking of moving from North London to Hampton/Hampton Hill, but I don't know much about the area apart from having visited a few times, and wanted to get some advice, namely on:

  • Schools: We have a 2.5-year-old. I've read on other (older) threads that primaries are good but secondaries are not great - is this still the case?
  • I've also read in previous threads that some parts of Hampton are "rougher" (that description is from the threads, not my own). I was wondering what people mean by that, and which areas are considered "rough". All of the areas seemed nice when we went to visit so I'm just wondering.
  • How would you would describe the demographic in Hampton/Hampton Hill. I am half British but grew up in other countries, and in our current neighborhood we have a lot of international friends - just wondering how similar or different H/HH is in this respect
Thanks for your advice

Pretty much all primaries are v good in RUT. If you have a DD there is an outstanding girls secondary in Twickenham which many from Hampton get into. The area is predominantly white but you won't feel out of place if you're not. I don't know about the "rough" areas. From my experience it seems suburban and quiet.

Hi Hampton Hill is busier than Hampton. Property is smaller, generally. Carlisle Primary and Hampton Hill Junior are great schools. State secondaries are more hit and miss in Hampton, as the ,local one is not performing well, although I understand that a lot of work is going into it, and a partnership is in place with Waldegrave School for girls to share best practise, so watch this space. There are a number of good independents including Lady Eleanor Hollies, Hampton School for boys and more recently opened Nightingale House Prep, which is part of the Jack and Jill School. Both are close to Bushy Park and Hampton Court and Kew are not far away,

The high street in Hampton Hill is very friendly and has all the shops you need, for everyday, bakery, pharmacy, supermarket, libarary etc whilst there is an NHS dentist in Hampton.

Also lots to do with Toddler groups and so on,

Hope I helped.

I forgot to mention if living in catchment, access to Waldegrave School for girls is very attractive. This school has a great reputation,

Hampton hill you may be in catchment area for Waldegrave but some people in Hampton are out of the catchment area.

I think the less nice looking houses are by the A316. But I do have a soft spot for the area, the houses are lovely. Would love there if I could.

Hi,

I've lived in Hampton/Hampton Hill area for the last 15 years and it's a really nice place to be when you have young kids. On the positive side all of the state primaries are good and there are also a lot of good independent options if that's the way you want to go.

The local secondary in Hampton is as you say not great and hasn't been great for as long as I've been around here. I think that's partly because a lot of parents in the area choose to go private at secondary or send girls to Waldergrave.

However there is a new school called Turing House which is closer to Hampton Hill just near Teddington Walk in Centre which only opened a couple of years ago. My elder dd has some friends there who think it's great and I know that their mums are really pleased with it so that's also an option.

There are definitely plenty of options for playgroups and things but that is because there has been a real increase (and related large house price rises) of families being priced out of Richmond/Twickenham/Teddington).

On the downside outside of the parks and playgroups there isn't much going on in Hampton it's very, very suburban so if you're used to a lot of life it might seem seem quite quiet? Hampton Hill is admittedly better for that and not sure of your budget but if you wanted a few more shop/restaurant options on your doorstep you consider Teddington?

In terms of roughter/nicer areas Hampton Hill is all nice. Hampton village (around the station) is also all nice. As you move closer to the border with Hanworth either down Swan Road or down past the middle of Hanworth Road and behind the senior schools these aren't so great. Nurserylands used to not have a great reputation and the bit around the small Sainsbury's isn't amazing but I think it's getting nicer.

HTH and good luck, I've probably been a little bit pessmiistic as it really is a nice place to raise a family.

I didn't realise about Turing - that's interesting, very helpful info, thanks!
