im so depressed.
another compromise on my basement because of the drains is that I need to have a macerator for the toilet and the shower in the downstairs loo.
before I weep - can anyone tell me a good story about a macerator. can anyone tell me how much a really good macerator will cost? is there such a thing as a good macerator?

the horror is that this house will be rented for ten years before I move back in.

I am bumping this as I would also like positive macerator stories! We are putting on in our garage conversion as it doesn't look like there is any other option..

rosybell · 03/04/2018 16:37

Just to add, we were advised to spend around £600 to get a decent macerator.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/04/2018 16:38

Macerators nowadays are really fine. Don't cry!

What would you like to know?

Saniflo is the market leader and are really excellent. Talk to your plumber or your builders merchant about them

I have heard both good and bad about them- I plan on putting one in as my upstairs ensuite. A friend of mine had one for ten years and it was their only toilet. Never had a problem with it.

That's against building regs!

RoadToRivendell · 03/04/2018 16:44

I can tell you how much they cost, because I've bought and subsequently replaced our macerator probably 4 times over the past 10 years. They are absolute shite and I'd do anything to avoid one.

It's also connected to our washing machine and this is the primary culprit so maybe you'll have better luck.

Anyway, I buy Saniflo on Ebay usually, and they're around £350. I have an engineer in on average about twice a year and every third or fourth time it's beyond recall.

RoadToRivendell · 03/04/2018 16:45

What's the regulation breach, Practice?

rosybell · 03/04/2018 16:47

Thank you for all the replies. I am not actually the OP so hopefully they will see this too! Can anyone advise how noisy they are? On a previous thread it compared the sound to a pneumatic drill.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/04/2018 16:51

Part G of the Building Regs from memory. You can only have a macerator loo if there is access to an ordinary gravity fed loo in the property. That's because if there is a power cut then you are, quite literally, in the shit without a gravity discharged loo Grin

RoadToRivendell · 03/04/2018 16:52

The noise is not a problem for me. It's relatively quiet.

RoadToRivendell · 03/04/2018 16:53

Ah, I see. That's seems like one of the more sensible regs!

BitOutOfPractice · 03/04/2018 16:55

It's amazing what arcane knowledge one picks up in the course of a career isn't it? It's been many years since I needed to know that! Grin

Oh god when I was young and had to rent a really cheap flat we had a saniflo as the only loo and it was hell. The absolute fear and worry that it would break (and it did about 3 times and had to be replaced totally once because a bloody clear plastic top from a razor accidentally fell down the loo with no one noticing and it caught in it and burnt out the noter while it was trying to munch it up) also shit landlord had the sink and washing machine linked to the one saniflo in the bathroom so we had to be incredibly careful about the sink plug hole too. The sound of the horrible thing still haunts my dreams. Gross and stressful.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/04/2018 17:06

That's hardly the macerator's fault though is it Buglife?

Silvercatowner · 03/04/2018 17:26

We had one in an en suite and it was fine, if rather noisy. It lasted 4 years without breaking down before we moved (and may be still going strong, no idea).

cathyandclare · 03/04/2018 17:31

We've had one for ten years. It's fine, blocked once and had to get a man in. The trick is not to keep flushing if it's blocked just switch it off and wait to see if it clears or get it serviced,

Buglife · 03/04/2018 17:37

It’s not the macerators fault that it was the only one there, no, but they were incredibly easy to accidentally break is my point.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/04/2018 17:38

It sounds like there were too many appliances plumbed into it bugslife, plus it will burn out if anything like plastic is put down.
