Is Rotherham an ok place to live? Or chesterfield?

We are still house hunting in the Sheffield area and can’t find anything we like for our 300k budget. (Three beds, detached).

So are thinking of widening the search area. Rotherham seems cheap. I’ve never been there in my life. Commuting into Sheffield by public transport seems ok and I read there’s a new tram line about to be set up from Rotherham. I ideally need to be somewhere where it’s easy to get into Sheffield by public transport as parking an issue at work.

Then started wondering about chesterfield as thought could get a train from there? But I read chesterfield is quite rough? As long as the area I live in is ok though guess not too bothered, won’t be planning nights out in local bars.

We’re both quite outdoorsy, so somewhere with good access to dog walks, cycle trails would be good. We love the Peak District and in an ideal world would live there but again out of budget. Don’t need to worry about schools/kids.

A friend who lived there told me that Royston Case from League of Gentlemen is based on Penistone.
It's actually based on a village called Alston in Cumbria.

*Royston Vasey even, damn autocorrect

This thread really shows the cultural split of UK. What is football culture? Do they talk lacrosse in Dore?

No - cricket and Rugby! We have the big sports club next door where Yorkshire train, Michael Vaughan teaches and Joe Root learned so it's pretty much a given!

I thought it was Hadfield near Glossop!

The LOG actors trained at the former Bretton College, in the wider Wakefield/Barnsley/Huddersfield/Penistone area.

Isn't Bretton College now the Yorkshire Sculpture Park? Love that place.

whiskyowl · 13/12/2017 12:26

(I thought it was Glossop or Hadfield too)

Wow, you really hate Penistone whisky.

I think it must be your personal experience. Loads of us have much more positive experiences of the area. And the Tour Dr Yorkshire is coming through again next year. Yay!

whiskyowl · 13/12/2017 12:55

I'm afraid I do lonicera. I won't even drive through it now if I can help it. It didn't help that while I lived there, I was trapped next to the Twits - neighbours from hell, who threatened me, verbally abused me, and shot my cat. I've never lived anywhere where people are so cold, weird, and unfriendly - they are direct in a way that can be quite intrusive and rude. I appreciate that others have had very different experiences and like the place, but for me I cannot imagine living anywhere worse. I now live in Sheffield and am very, very much happier.

whisky Bretton College was in YSP, but the 1970s College buildings have been demolished. Bretton Hall itself has planning permission to be turned into a luxury hotel.

whiskyowl · 13/12/2017 13:46

It'll be a lovely place to stay - surrounded by some really fine art!

BikeRunSki · 13/12/2017 21:07

Yes, i’m Wondering how I am ever going to justify staying in a hotel less than 10 mins away!
