Extending a 1930s semi... Help!

We are just about to purchase a 1930s semi with the garage set back in the garden and carport that runs the whole side of the house. We really want to incorporate an open plan kitchen dinner and seating area at the back of the house.

I’m thinking close of the existing living room, creating an adult area and nick a little bit of the existing kitchen to create a small utility and downstairs toilet off the hall.

Then knock through kitchen dinner, extending out with an L shaped design (the garage is in the way to extend the whole width) to create a third quandrant for either the dinning table or sofa (which would you prefer to be nearest the garden??)

However my visual spatial skills are questionable and I’m worried space will be tight, the total width would be 5.3metres...

Has anyone done something similiar? Or have alternative suggestions? Would love to see pics!!

Xx

Most of the houses here are 1930s - we've extended ours (as most people have). If you go on your local planning authority's planning website and search for planning applications in your road (and other roads with similar houses), you can see what others have done.

Can you put up a diagram of your existing house and your intended design? It's kind of hard to see what you mean without one!

Yes a diagram would be helpful - I know it your head it's clear but I'm not sure what L shape you mean.

I looked at nearby houses on Rightmove and then checked out their floor plans to see what could be done.

Bax that looks wonderful but I think 1930s houses are quite peculiar in the streets they were built on (generally have less space at the side than you have) and structural complications (eg great big chimney breasts right through the house) which from experience of extending other houses, make them different to later (say 50s or 60s) houses.
