Dc have the loft as their games room as it is boarded out and insulated ,Velux window and electrics. It has no heating though and at the moment is bloody freezing
What would be the cheapest ansd most effective way of heating up there

I’ve got electric heaters in my house but on the walls. I live in a loft style extension of a property and they are amazing and don’t cost much.
I wouldn’t use the plug in ones as they will probably never turn them off and god forbid start a fire or something.

Can you afford to get a radiator plumbed in?
Or how about an plugbin oil filled radiator on a timer

venys · 09/12/2017 16:22

I was going to say oil filled radiator. Timer.is a good idea (they have built in themrostats too).

insulation is the most important thing. Tell us first what insulation this loft has.

walls have kingspan insulation , floors deep fibre glass in beween supported joists topped off with chipboard and carpet etc. All done before we bought it

We have an oil filled plug in radiator in our attic room. We had intended to get a radiator connected to our central heating system put in when we got the attic converted but so many people told us that they don't work well that we didn't bother. The oil filled one is brill.

My eldest has an attic room which has minimal insulation, its also large. He has 2 radiators which run off the central heating system and his room is always toasty warm.

PigletJohn · 09/12/2017 21:17

when you say walls, do you mean the roof slopes and the knee walls? And the gable ends?

In which case heat loss should be very small. Try a 1kW oil-filled radiator at each end. If the open space is very large, it will be easier to heat if divided into "rooms" with closeable doors. If it is open plan with an open stairwell, there will be a constant airflow, presumably escaping through the roof ventilators.

You will be able to detect any uninsulated surfaces, because they will attract dust to form pattern staining, and possibly also condensation (water vapour is lighter that air so will rise through the house into the loft).

OUr bedroom is in a coverted loft - we do have a small radiator up there but it's switched off as it's absolutely boiling up there. If their games room is so cold, the insulation can't be as good as you think it is.

A small fan heater or oil radiator would probably be best.

Yes PigletJohn , I meant roof slopes and gable ends. Will look at oil filled plug in with a timer
Do other posters find them expensive to run?
