Should vendors clean house?

Just that really... would you expect vendors to clean a property you've purchased before they move out?

I would clean it if I was selling.
But I would also clean any house I'd bought.

When we bought current house we had a posse of friends and family to help us clean.

Well, it's nice if they do, but whenever I've moved I've been that glad to be in and it's finally over, a bit of cleaning doesn't bother me.

I don't think anyone is going to say no. It's simply courteous to at least tackle the dust bunnies liberated as furniture is removed.

If they have time.

We cleaned our last house from top to bottom and the buyers still booked cleaners. I didn't book cleaners because I assumed our vendors would do as we had done, and they left the place filthy.

It’s nice if they have but if you expect it you’re likely to be disappointed.

Not expected but massively appreciated if they do.
We moved into current house about 4 years ago and I was completely prepared for a couple of days deep cleaning before putting all our stuff away.
When we arrived it was sparklingly clean. Even in dark corners etc. not a trace of grubbiness. I was SO blinking grateful to the vendors as it meant we could get settled straight away and it felt like 'ours' from the beginning. I still think kindly of them and wish them well all this time later and will try to do the same for the buyers when we leave it ourselves.

I think — I hope — that people try to leave their old place as clean as they hope to find the new place.

We all know that tonnes of dust bunnies will surface. I’ve always tried to leave my old place as tidy as possible.

Even a brand new house (I’ve had 2) still needs cleaning, in fact one of my new builds was the dirtiest house I bought.

I don’t expect it no. But I cleaned our place thoroughly when we sold ours.

The place we moved into was not particularly clean. It had that air of being superficially clean but there were decades of dust behind the radiators and it smelt of dog (still does where we’ve not replaced the carpets etc).

Same here. I think it's so rude to leave a dirty house and I would personally be mortified to do it but people do so don't expect it. People's standards of cleanliness also vary massively!

I've only ever bought two houses and both were filthy on moving in day.

The EA claimed our vendors had spent 'hours' cleaning the house for us which was why they were four hours late with the keys.

I assume what she meant by that was that the vendors had spent the day pissing about, decided to leave all their crap behind under the guise of 'helping us out' and ran out of time. The hair ball I pulled out of the shower plughole made me actually heave. And thanks for the half-empty bottle of Tia Maria, you fuckers.

We would clean the house, or pay for someone to come in and clean it if we didn't have time. The reality seems to be that a lot of people don't.

Yy we had some who were supposedly cleaning. I’d say it was unlikely they did anything beyond rip stuff out leaving live wires, holes where shrubs had once been and the stickiest kitchen floor ever.

The thing is, if your house is pretty clean, by the time all the white goods have been pulled out, wardrobes moved, all the other bits and dust, it ends up a bit shabby. Gunk in the plughole sounds gross though. You're in now, after what I'm sure has been months of wait. Just try and put your energy into your new place. Best wishes.

Yes - there's usually something in the forms to that effect. I have left spotless houses and never yet moved into one which was cleaned to my standards, including one that wasn't cleaned at all.

I don't think people ever feel it is clean unless they have cleaned it themselves.

I do give it the once over when I'm leaving but I don't go mad.
Most places I've moved into have been ok but I've always wanted to clear them myself anyway.

I'm in the process of selling our first family home, to move 300 miles away.

I left our first home (sold pre-kids) immaculate although this was was filthy but have no idea how I will do it this time.. and get to the new place (to clean there before the removers arrive) with kids and cats in tow..?

The thought is actually stressing me out slightly.

I don’t expect it to be cleaned just not a total wreck. Even if the previous owners got cleaners in I would still give it a clean myself so no point really.

Our last move the packers had taken everything but the beds the day before so we gave the house a really good scrub that evening - it wasn’t deep cleaned but was absolutely presentable (other than the living room carpet which needed replacing but that would have been apparent on the five viewings our nervous first time buyers had been on) Our vendors had got cleaners in so new place was sparkling clean!

I have moved quite a few times, usually just dust and mop, so presentable, perhaps not sparkling though.
I moved into a spectacularly dirty house once. It was filthy when I viewed it, and stank, which was why it had been on the market a long time. Some people are just dirty pigs. The loo was indescribable, and was the first of many things I replaced. Good job I was young and keen, couldn't face that amount of endless filthy slog now.
