Has anyone changed the look of a modern house to more traditional windows etc

I just wondered as we have found a house in a beautiful spot with lots of space but its whole appearance is not really my thing!

I would love to be encouraged if anyone has changed the external look of the house significantly and been happy with it.

Or to know of a recommended company that specialises in it?

Thanks so much

It might be possible. Just depends what you’re changing from and to. Like proportions of windows and sizes etc. But it’s doable. You’d probably want an architect if unsure what and how to do it.

I’ve found some pictures for you.

jojo are they all from the same extension company?*? They don't look too bad, but they are part of big extensions, so more variables being changed.
I think you are better off going more modern rather than trying to look older, less ersatz...
So, probably big, single pane grey aluminium windows, solid timber doors with vertical planks, large sans serif house numbers.

Company called Back to Front specialise in this

JoJoSM2 · 29/11/2017 21:29

Scrubby, the pics are off the internet and not sure which companies did the makeover. On the ersatz front, I’m from the school of thought of ‘whatever floats your boat’. None of this is the pinnacle of modern design anyway.

Ersatz can be fun too- totally agree, your house, your taste

I think you would want an architect as they understand things like proportions of windows that might be quite subtle, but would make a big difference, you could target your budget more effectively then.

Also what is the house's wider situation? If it's in a street of similar ones it might look contrived but if it's in its own plot you could look at styles of older houses in the area.

There is a book "village buildings of Britain" by Matthew Rice, it's very interesting on blending new and old homes, different regional styles and how you can get it wrong!

Bluntness100 · 30/11/2017 10:31

Yes you can totally do this, but it’s not cheap. Images posted are good ones, you don’t need to extend, but you can do things like timber clad, change windows etc

Thank you so much wonderful people. This is so encouraging; the house is on its own with very pretty traditional houses nearby.

I will look at each of these replies slowly now and really hope we get the house!
