Anyone know how much an electrician should charge for putting in some extra sockets around my home?

Not a clue but I had to come on here to say I read that as slug pockets ConfusedGrin

It's a bump for your post anyway!

parkview094 · 28/11/2017 17:46

Very roughly £50/socket (South East)

Heratnumber7 · 28/11/2017 17:48

£50 per socket????

Blimey!

candlefloozy · 28/11/2017 17:48

@SillyBub lol!! I don't think I need any of those!! Lmao!!

Yes def £50 a socket - had some done recently.

parkview094 · 28/11/2017 17:51

oops - sorry, closer to £60 looking at the previous invoices we've had. Although probably will depend how many you need and a corresponding minimum charge.

candlefloozy · 28/11/2017 17:54

Thanks all. I'm not sure how many exactly I need yet

Alas it will depend on how much work it is to put the sockets in, e.g. I have had two new sockets put in in two bedrooms. It involved getting the carpet up and running new cable under the floorboards to the other side of the room, then knocking two holes in, putting two sockets in and then plastering the hole back up. Several hours' work.

I'd make sure you group the work together so you only pay one call-out charge, and of course get a quote for the work first.

Moreisnnogedag · 28/11/2017 18:03

Do you mean as pp said - running cables to an entirely new area or just changing out sockets?

candlefloozy · 28/11/2017 18:56

I need new sockets putting in. So in my new Home there is one plug socket in the bedroom. I need another one in there and some other places

Changing a single socket to a double should be quite quick & cheap.

Putting in a new socket in a different place will be a much bigger job, possibly involving lifting carpets/floorboards, laying cables, etc.

Heratnumber7 · 28/11/2017 19:43

Ah! I thought you meant replacing an existing socket with a more modem decker in the same place.

OP - can you run extension leads round the outside of the room instead? Behind the furniture? You can get some quite long ones.

candlefloozy · 28/11/2017 20:35

@Heratnumber7 I could and we said we would try that but it's an old house and we're worried that it might blow the house if there's too much power outage if that makes sense? I think we need to get an electrician in Just to check it anyway.

Is your consumer box up to date as you mentioned it was an old house, Our consumer box is dated and I had to get an RCD double socket put in cost £100 as I couldn’t have a normal socket as it was in a new place and I would have had to have a new consumer unit.

We are going to update our consumer unit and get more sockets but will have it done in the summer months.

candlefloozy · 29/11/2017 17:10

@LightastheBreeze I'm not sure. I think I just need an electrician to come and have a look at it all. I'm not bothered about the sockets but other half is.

If your house is prone to power outages, it's worth getting the electrics checked. If they haven't been looked at for decades, you may need new wiring, possibly a new main fuseboard, to make them conform to regs. It might cost more than you bargained for but it will be safe.

LightastheBreeze · 29/11/2017 17:33

Yes it probably is a good idea to get a an electrician in to look over it all, our consumer unit is from the 1990s so is the wiring, apparently the wiring is fine but the consumer unit hasn’t got the rcds so needs updating if we want any new sockets or wiring, the consumer unit will probably cost £500-600 to get replaced.

we will get it done in the summer with some new sockets as it will involve having the electric off and doors open and stuff and it is cold and dark now.

Hopefully yours is more modern so will be ok, we knew nothing of all this until I got electrician round to put in a socket and then we got told the rather expensive news about it needing upgrading.

candlefloozy · 29/11/2017 19:09

@whiskyowl @LightastheBreeze thank you both. We were told it may need upgrading. So I think it's safe but there's just not many sockets. Same as the radiators, there's only three in the whole house so we need to have some more put in too. But we will defo get it looked at after the new year
