Big project to sort out house - where to start?

Hi All

I’ve got a bit of a task ahead of me so some advice would be appreciated. A close relative has a house that’s got in a real mess - clutter, very very dirty, needs new kitchen, carpets and doors at least. I think wiring and plumbing and structure is fine. It’s also quite emotionally charged for various reasons.

I have no experience of any house works really. Does anyone with more have any advice for where to get started/prioritise? Thanks in advance!

I'm really not an expert but I would suggest de-cluttering first so that you can then see the true extent of any work to be done.

A couple of years ago, my Mum (mid-70s) hired a skip and we spent a few days clearing out a load of stuff. We all thought it would be more emotional than it was. Making the decision to do it was probably the hardest part for her.

I’d also start with a declutter. With piles of stuff in the way it’s near impossible to clean, not to mention getting work done.

Thanks - ok declutter first so we can get a sense of how much dirt there is to sort out!

Chuck out all the rubbish first, a skip would be handy.
I have a close relative I have done this for, but each time the rubbish and dirt accumulated again because he is a hoarder. I sincerely hope your relative isn't one of these, it's soul destroying. The last time I used a clearance company, which cost a bit more, but at least I didn't have to get my hands dirty.
