Does anyone have a tiny playroom?

When we redo our house next year I’m hoping to get a tiny playroom in 1.8x2.4 has anyone got one that’s really small too that could share pictures or what they’ve got in it? Do your kids use it? Do you have more toy storage around the house?

I converted my very narrow garage into a play room , DD never played in it and just dragged her toys into the lounge- it turned into a dumping ground .

dantdmistedious · 27/11/2017 12:52

We converted our loft into a playroom. Hardly ever gets used, they just drag all the stuff downstairs.

You could put up plenty of shelves and decent storage and think of it as a toy storage room. I find play rooms work well when they are open plan/next to the kitchen (or whichever room you tend to spend most time in), otherwise, as PPs have said, children just bring their toys to the kitchen, sitting room etc.

We have a smallish playroom. We have boxes for toys and shelves for books and games. There's a sofa, tv and dvd player etc. It does get used and useful for sleepovers too. DD does still play in the living room but it means we have limited toys in there and there is somewhere to clear them away to. Older kids play wii etc in there.

We had a playroom - it didn' get used, they follow me with toys. In the end I knocked it through - made a bigger living room with clever storage (and corners) where you couldn't see the clutter in the evening. This was the second attempt of having a playroom at various ages.

Ecureuil · 27/11/2017 13:59

Yeah we have, it gets used a lot. Makes me feel so much better not having all the toys in my lounge too. We’ve got a big ikea kallax unit in there, small sofa and a TV (although not connected to anything except a DVD player).

Ecureuil · 27/11/2017 14:00

Oh and a mini table and chairs (ikea) where they do drawing/colouring etc

redmarkone · 27/11/2017 21:05

have a playroom, never used by my children, they want to be around us all the time!

Ecureuil · 27/11/2017 21:08

I should point out that I spend a lot of time playing with them in their playroom! I wouldn’t get away with just sending them in there and going into the lounge. I still prefer having it though as it means all the toys are in there, and I can shut the door on it when they’re in bed!

MrsMotherHen · 27/11/2017 21:13

We have one its great keeps most of the toys out the main lounge. We have a massive toy trunk table with small tv a sofa and a play pen and jumperoo for the dd6months. I sit in there with the them as they are only 2 and months but we love it in there.

buckeejit · 27/11/2017 21:55

We converted our garage so not v small but the ikea Kaplan are great for sorting stuff. Or get a joiner to do a wall of floor to ceiling shelves-when stuff is stored away you don't need a big floor space

whyismykid · 27/11/2017 21:58

We had a small playroom in the last house - and it was hardly used - just toy storage. So we now have Family Room - and then a smaller grown up sitting room and it works so much better. We have sofas and a TV as well as all the toys in the family room, and it means we can play together/ watch a movie etc, and I know I have the little grown up sitting room to escape to in the evenings so I don't mind if there are toys every where! Space to turn your tiny play room into a little sitting room for you?

Appraiser · 27/11/2017 22:03

We have one about the same size.

It gets used and is fab for storage once we brought the big kallax furniture from Ikea.

As pp said, things get dragged out of there and into our living room but put back again so leaves our main living area free of clutter.

If dd has friends over, they go in the play room

If it’s a mess, like now (see pic, I shoved things back on the shelves and out of sight), I literally shut the door on it! Dd gets told to tidy up weekly and we sort out boxes once every few months to remove the crap - currently overdue!

Yes. It's more a storage corner off our kitchen diner. Useful as up to 2 kids can play within sight. If it's just me and dd3 we might play in it on the floor. If other kids are round they pick 2 or 3 bigger items like a marble run or lego and spread themselves out in the lounge. Crafts and messy stuff at the table. Books read on a small sofa on the other side of the table.

KeepingItReal78 · 27/11/2017 22:21

Very tiny. This is all the toy storage. Crafts and in drawers with child locks. I can see it from main part of the room. Thought about tidying it up before posting but why bother - and you get more or an idea of the size with toys thrown about.

We've done the big family lounge, small adult snug/study thing. I realised that whenever we have people round these days its either family or friends with kids so it makes sense to socialise with the kids and toys.

bumblingbovine49 · 28/11/2017 06:33

I have never really understood the idea of playrooms for young children. In my experience they generally want to either play around or be with the adults in the family. If they are a bit older and are playing with siblings or friends then the tend not to want to be constrained to one particular room anyway.

I can see using it for you storage etc but it rarely works out as the place where 'the children play" enough for it to worth allocating a room for.

If you have sharing of bedrooms it might give extra space if one of/ some of the children want to be separate for a while but otherwise I think children's bedrooms are enough of a "playroom" for younger children

For teenagers however, i can see how a separate room for them to use ,/have friends round is useful if you have space for it.

Fadingmemory · 28/11/2017 06:34

Years ago I looked at a house with a largish playroom with two small bedrooms opening from it. Didn't buy the house but it seemed like a good idea. If you are doing major work you could consider it. We had a family room with a TV which opened off the kitchen . The children did use it just about every day, but I also spent time in there with them (or I was in the kitchen immediately next door). Using my family's experience children want to play near their parents, especially when they are young - they don't take themselves off to playrooms. They eventually spend most of their spare time in their bedrooms of course. We did not have TV in the sitting room - this made the family room more attractive.
