Disposing of old paint pots

What does everyone do?

I live in London, and have whole cupboard shelf full of paint pots that were here when we moved in + ones we've accumulated over the years.

It's doesn't feel right to put them in the bin (for environment reasons) but I've suddenly got a bee in my bonnet and need rid.

Thanks!

We take our to the local recycling centre to be disposed of, we don't live in London though, I would probably google to see which local centre takes them.

That's an idea @LightastheBreeze - will have a look!

Yes, your local recycling centre should be able to take them and use them. We have a charity (in Leeds) specifically for paint so hopefully you have something similar.

Most recycling centres in London boroughs will take the paint. If it's not obvious where it goes, ask one of the workers.

Is there still paint in them? If so I’ve Freecycled half used cans of paint with great success

LeeksPotatoes · 27/11/2017 10:29

Our local recycling centre take them, but only at certain times of year.

IceFall · 27/11/2017 10:48

Yup there is a paint recycling at my local tip

We're in London too, but my neighbour was told the only thing to do with old paint was to take the lid off, wait for it to solidify and then put it in the bin. Don't know why (it seems) our local recycling site won't take it.

It's always popular on Freecycle and local FB giveaway page, though.

This is what we are advised as an alternative to recycling if you must put it in the bin.

Our local tip takes paint tins, however if there is paint in them, they need to be filled with sand - I assume to bind the paint to something in case it spills, but they will only take a couple of tins at a time from each person so so,times it takes a few trips spread over a few weeks.
