How cheaply can you replace a kitchen?

Hope to replace the small kitchen in my flat in about 6 months time. It’s approx 2.4 x 2.6.

Will hopefully be moving out of here in the summer of 2020, so I don’t want to spend a fortune that I’ll never make back. Just need something modern and functional to help me sell it, but don’t want it to be absolutely basic and boring if I have to look at it for another two years.

So, how cheaply can it be done?

Thank you!

Depends on the state of your current kitchen tbh....

If the layout and basic units are in good nick, you can achieve a hell of a lot by replacing the doors (or painting) of the units and new modern handles, taps etc

New high end worktops can make a huge difference and given the size of your kitchen you could definitely be in the market for granite "off cuts".

My general rule is spend money on infrastructure of it needs it (you can't paint a turd) but if what you have is basically sound you can do a hell of a lot with a relatively low spend - new taps, get appliances professionally cleaned, new/painted cabinets, paint tiled splash backs with tile paint etc.

I "made over" my kitchen for £500 doing stuff like this until I was ready to do it from scratch which cost me £40k.

We’re just finishing off our new kitchen which will be £20k odd BUT that due to wall down between kitchen/diner & if it’s just a tart up you can do v cheap.

Check out a Facebook page called DIY on a budget for some ideas. Also Pinterest is your friend here

If the carcasses are in good order then you could just replace doors and worktops from the take away ranges at b&q or wicked for a couple of hundred. If they need replacing you could still do it for under £1000 with the same ranges.

How capable are you at diy? The carcasses and doors are pretty easy to assemble but I would recommend getting a pro in to do the worktops!

youchangeyourusername · 25/11/2017 22:34

Thanks all.

The carcasses are decent enough, I think. But the layout could do with very slight alteration. Not the plumbing or anything, though.

I’m awful at DIY, so that’s a non starter.

Ideally, I don’t want to spend more than 4K. Is that possible for the size, do you think?

You could deco do great things with that budget but if you’re moving soon-couple of years-think carefully on whet you spend the money on, thinking about the new folk.

Ikea looks the same as anywhere else for a fraction of the cost. We got the fitting too and all on interest free credit. Soft close drawers, appliances, upstands etc. All in.

youchangeyourusername · 25/11/2017 22:46

Remain how much for, if you don’t mind?

Galley kitchen, 4 units each side. No wall units. All appliances Inc dishwasher and washing machine. And fitting. 4.5k over 3 years. We actually went for some mid range options, so it could have been even cheaper. Total bargain.

Recommend you go b and q or magnet or wherever to get a quote first for full effect Grin

Have a look at DIY Kitchens, we just had ours done and ordered the units from them. They are fantastic quality and the whole kitchen came to a third of what wicked and B&Q quoted for our kitchen which is 3.5mx3.5m. We got a local plumber to redo some pipework and move the position of the sink. We then got a reputable local handyman who had experience of fitting kitchens (found through Facebook) to trip out, fit the new and fully decorate the space. All in we spent around £4K.

DIY Kitchens units came fully made up so that saved a lot of time and therefore money with our fitter.

youngestisapsycho · 25/11/2017 23:11

We installed a new kitchen, incl the wall oven, hob and fan, floor tiles and wall tiles it came to £3K. Washing machine and fridge we kept from previous and bought a slimline dishwasher for £189.

youngestisapsycho · 25/11/2017 23:12

But that was because my husband fitted it all himself.... worktops included in that £3k...

I’m on DIY kitchens and on about page 60 of nosying through the real kitchens. Grin Very impressive. Although I’m in Scotland, so can’t visit the showroom, and I’m in a top floor flat which they won’t deliver to Sad

I’ve just replaced my kitchen. I have a 3m x 3m kitchen. Loads of units and worktops. New fridge freezer £795, oven £400 and microwave £400. Hob £150 ish. Total cost of kitchen was £4550. All bought from Ikea. It looks beautiful.

SammySays · 26/11/2017 00:42

youchange I’m just outside of London so didn’t visit the showroom either, I took the plunge based on loads of recommendations from this site. I will say I am really happy with the quality and look of the units but I did go for a basic white gloss. I got the worktops from B&Q though so that I could check them against the flooring in person (I had new flooring put down too also from B&Q. Maybe give DIY Kitchens a call though and explain about living on the top floor and see what they could do? They had a few delivery options if I remember. Good luck with it all!

youchangeyourusername · 26/11/2017 15:22

Thanks all. Maybe it is worth calling them, but they’re delivery options seemed very specific. Even the £250 option doesn’t deliver more than 6 steps up!

I’d maybe have to arrange some sort of removal men to help with the delivery.

Does anyone have a small kitchen they wouldn’t mind showing photos of?

I think 4K is doable if you get units from Ikea, cheap appliances and find some cheap labour.

Here are some pics of small kitchens in different styles.
