New roof in January ?

We're in the late stages of arranging for a full re-roofing job. We had wanted it done in November but it's dragged on and currently booked for first week of January.

It's only just occurred to me that this might be a terrible idea. January in Scotland- no roof!

They've explained they'll put the new membrane of which will waterproof it and then put the tiles on. It's all insulated as well as a 20s bungalow can be.

This isn't an emergency job - it needs work each year and ultimately needs done but it could wait til spring.

We live downstairs (it's a study and spare rooms upstairs) so happy to huddle together round a radiator downstairs.

Any experiences? This has literally just occured to me so not (yet) spoken with the roofer.

I did this in an Edwardian house including a single storey original part of the house ...... I would not do it again! Like yours it just dragged on, was a nice to have rather than a must have.

I wouldn't do it. Only just over a week but it was grim, very cold and clear nights so not wet but very very cold. We slept in the downstairs sitting room with a fire going but the minute you stepped out of the room you regretted it.

Is there a price difference for getting it done in the summer as opposed to January?

i.e. are roofers in higher demand during the summer months therefore this is reflected in their price?

If not I'd wait till the "warmer" British summer! :)

If it isn't an emergency job then I would wait until Spring.
I got a bungalow roof replaced in March and that worked out ok.

Unless your getting a discount, wait until spring. You can't predict the weather, but our springs tend to be fairly nice. If you're getting a substantial discount though I think I would just see it as an adventure, warm clothes etc and deal with it.

They say they put a gortex type felt on it and only remove one panel at a time. They've said there will be little temperature difference in the house.

Any positive experiences of this?
