New Silestone Worktop damage

We have just had our very expensive (6k) Silestone Quartz worktop installed yesterday into our kitchen and during this evening when inspecting one of the cutouts, I have noticed some deepish scratches!

Not sure what should be my approach?
The worktops were ordered and installed from a professional worktop company but was all arranged by the kitchen company that we bought our new kitchen from.

We have also noticed some damage to our walls - paint and some areas where some minor decorating will be required as they removed some skirting and had to make holes in the wall for the upstand...

Should we be kicking up a fuss about these issues and getting the kitchen company to arrange to resolve or should we expect some minor issues, as above?

No, FFS, they sound like muppets! You don't expect brand new worktops to be scratched, or for installation to do a lot of damage to a new kitchen! Get in touch with the kitchen company and see what they say - they may advise you to deal direct with the worktop people, but they need to know straight away you aren't satisfied. You've paid a load of cash for a really nice product and it should be perfect.

I think you can expect a tiny amount of damage to walls, but this sounds like more than that. I'm confused about needing to make holes for an upstand?!

Here are the pics, if it helps to visualise the issues -

I can't access the pictures but I have had Silestone for years and it's still perfect with no scratches. That either sounds like an issue in the manufacture process or a serious incident during transport (e.g. a fall or drop).

The people who installed mine said that in all their years, they've seen one get seriously damaged. Someone who had been slow cooking a meat joint for hours and hours at high heat took it out and put it directly on the silestone.

I'd go through the kitchen supplier as they're your contractor, not the people who provided it.

We had problems with a composite worktop that got damaged in transit. The suppliers repaired it, but you could tell because it is below a glass roof. After they made two further unsuccessful attempts to put it right, we rejected it. We had to go to another supplier, but it was worth it. Kitchens are expensive and you don't want to be noticing things that aren't right for all the years you live with the kitchen.

Please try the following link for the images of the worktop -

OK, that corner piece would pee me off. And that looks like quite bad damage to your kitchen doors?? Though it's a little hard to tell in any picture what is the plastic covering and what is the actual door?

I can't see the scratches on the picture - just the joins between slabs - can you point them out?

wowfudge · 22/11/2017 16:45

They need to sort this out.

cib77 · 22/11/2017 18:01

What corner piece are you referring to?
Damage to the kitchen door? All doors including base unit doors are fine, unless I have missed something?

Which picture are you referring to?

I would concentrate all your efforts on getting the worktop sorted, the wall damage is totally insignificant in comparison and you could easily tidy that up yourself.

cib77 · 22/11/2017 18:23

Humptynumpty02 - Apart from the scratches, what areas do you think are an issue?

The scratches look almost like a fault in the material. Who ordered and paid for the worktop? Who is your contract with? Whoever it is they need to sort out the scratch/ gougey looking bits. I wouldn't accept that.

The thing is you have to expect for things to go wrong on these big projects. The companies will be well used to fixing defects that customers won't accept and sometimes they will be really stubborn customers with trivial issues. Damaged product is not trivial. I'd say whoever put that worktop in didn't have too much grace and finesse but I don't think the damage to walls and skirting is worth quibbling over. Very easy to fix.

ElleMcElle · 22/11/2017 18:35

Yes - I would definitely want the worktop sorted. We are getting quotes for exactly the same product and sacrificing other things in our budget to pay for it - I wouldn't accept it if it wasn't perfect after installation.

If you don't mind sharing, I'd be really interested to know if you shopped around at all on the Silestone - and if so, if you found significant difference between quotes from different suppliers? What sort of dimensions do you have there?
