Fitting a TV bracket on a plasterboard wall

Ideally I want to put the TV (about 24 inch) on a wall - the wall is platerboard about 3 inches in front of a solid wall

I want to use a bracket with an arm so it can swing out quite far

I have a feeling this won't work - any suggestions?

You need the bracket to be attached to the brick or block wall behind the plasterboard. We had just this issue with attaching a radiator and a cupboard to a plasterboarded wall. You need these of sufficient length and the correct size to support the weight of the bracket and TV - see photo.

DP found he needed an extra long drill bit and you need to be careful to keep the drill straight.

I reckon that isn't a job for us; I hate having to find tradesmen for little jobs

Hmm - could you buy the bracket from a local supplier who might then offer an installation service?

Try looking at these below
Grip it fixings off dragons den (deb meadon jumped on)
young 18yr old designed them for plasterboard and they take the weight of a grown man standing on a radiator attached to plasterboard

I actually got Currys to do mine. Didn’t want to make a mistake as it was a 65 inch TV. You can only have a bracket that angles for very smallish TV I’d plaster board because of the weight it exerts. Currys have people that do it all day and know what they are taking about. Bloke in shopwas rubbish but actual fitter was knowledgeable.

“if plaster board”

I like that idea - I guess I might have to buy a new TV tho'

We had exactly the same issue.. In the end we got a chap in to do it for us.. Put huge mounting screws through the plasterboard and then into the brick wall so the TV could be mounted securely.. Wasn't a bad price for South London...

the plasterboard might be fastened to wooden battens that are fixed to the brick wall. In which case you only need to find them and use at least two to screw your bracket onto.

you can locate them by looking or feeling the dimples where the nails are in the plasterboard. Or you can drill a hole through the plasterboard and locate the position of the studs using my Special Tool which costs £50 plus P&P, or you can manufacture your own Special Tool by unfolding a wire coathanger and bending it into a gentle curve which you poke through the hole so it goes sideways until it finds the studs on both sides.

I notice that since I started describing how to manufacture the Special Tool I haven't sold many.

I might be able to see the battons as there is a water meter in a cupboard at the bottom of the wall (the pipes go sideways I checked)

I like your tool and I"m sorry you haven't sold many Grin

I really think getting a man in is our only option sadly - it is beyond DH & I (we struggle with curtain poles)
