Baths

Finally having a new bathroom in our never ending renovation & would welcome your opinions! It's a Victorian house/period feel throughout. There will be a separate shower.

The options are a Freestanding copper bath or a painted freestanding roll top bath (outside of bath painted in navy or dark grey)?

I've been looking on Pinterest and the copper & nickel baths do look wow to me. Or do you think they're horrible?!

I don't know anybody with one so wondered about the practicality of them. I never ever bath always shower but my OH & LO would use it regularly.

Opinions please!

A copper bath sounds awful to me - reminiscent of the old tin bath dragged into the living room on bath night.

4yearsnosleep · 19/11/2017 00:47

I think the copper looks amazing and I’ve always coveted them. Go to some good showrooms to help you decide. Most importantly choose exactly what you want, you wouldn’t want to spend all that money and then regret your choice. Good luck x

The copper ones do look lovely but I worry they will date. They are also very deep and very expensive so there are additional costs to bear and you’ll need to have access to a lot of hot water. If you want to be able to run a bath, the heating and/or shower at the same time you may have some trouble if your heating and plumbing system isn’t up to it.

We have a roll top and it’s a right pita for dripping water all over the floor because it’s not sealed. Not so bad for adults but useless for small children. You can buy one fairly cheaply and paint it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/11/2017 01:03

Nothing that will date. Also, if it’s a big chunk of iron/ceramic/metal what about under floor heating for warmth?

MsHarveySpecter · 19/11/2017 01:07

The copper Ines look great but I wonder if they're cold?
They're also about £6k aren't they?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/11/2017 01:08

I think they warm up quite quickly because they’re metal and conduct the heat well.

Tbh any metal bath is going to heat up quickly but also cool down quickly too.

MsHarveySpecter · 19/11/2017 01:08

Check your floor can take the weight too if you go for metal

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/11/2017 01:08

That’s a very good point.

MsHarveySpecter · 19/11/2017 01:09

Oh good point moving!

Copper baths are very on trend ATM but will fall out of fashion soon. A roll top has never looked anything less than amazing.

have you got a maid to polish the copper every day?

Sunisshining12 · 19/11/2017 10:33

Haha no Piglet I don't have a maid, I am the maid Wink

We have a new boiler & pressurised cylinder so can handle the water demand (not that I would fill it to the top anyway). At the moment only my LO's use the bath so not much water & they share :)

I've found a few copper baths up north circa £1k. If I were to have a painted roll top it probably wouldn't be cast iron, just that look.

Yes I take your point about going out of fashion never really considered that :-/

I appreciate they are probably a love or hate thing

Copper baths unlikely to go out of fashion as they are a classic antique bath - same as a roll top - I wanted one in my first house renno 30 years ago but coulnt afford in (£5-6K) let me know where you can get one for £1k I will take two!

They are used in many high end boutique hotels - so I think that they would have considered that they wont go out of fashion before investing.

Sunisshining12 · 19/11/2017 14:05

@another you're throwing a spanner in the works Wink

I really can't decide! I'm worried about the practicality of the copper bath/cleaning/water usage BUT I do think they look fabulous & ive waited sooooo long to do the bathroom & are roll top baths pretty standard now? BUT the copper ones are an expensive mistake if it soon goes out of fashion ARGHH!!!

Another, I can pm you the details? There are some on eBay under £2k & there are 2 companies in up North that are selling 2 end of line copper baths for £1k but I don't want to disclose who until I've decided incase you swoop them haha!

I think the copper ones look stunning but might not be to everyone's taste if you sell I suppose.

I'd probably just go for it if you've been wanting to do the bathroom for a long time to be honest Grin

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/11/2017 14:21

Ime hotels don’t operate like that another20. They absolutely do not plan for their interiors to last a long time because of the heavy wear and because high end places (that would have such baths) expect to have to refit fairly regularly to keep ahead of the latest trends.

I’ve also seen cheaper copper baths on eBay for about 1k.

Check the depth carefullly - can you get the children in and out easily? They tend to be very deep.

Sunnyshores · 19/11/2017 17:19

I love the copper baths, but agree they will date. I think as will a grey painted roll-top, not a navy blue (but assume you can repaint cheaply).

Sunisshining12 · 19/11/2017 19:05

I'd be interested to hear if anyone on here actually has a copper bath & if you regret it?

Okay, my next question is with a copper bath - wooden floor or black & white Victorian tiles?

With a painted roll top (most likely dark navy or charcoal) what flooring?

Thanks :)

Freestanding? Lots of lovely dirt traps. They went out for a reason.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/11/2017 20:42

We have a robot hoover that does a grand job under the bath.

The water leaking down the sides and then through the kitchen ceiling is slightly less practical...
