Has anyone done this themselves? You tube making it look deceptively easy and electricians quoting crazy money. Am
I being realistic thinking I can do this?

What kind of light fitting? A ceiling rose?

Yes, really simple ceiling rose and there are wall lights too but I'm happy just to get rid of those rather then replace them.

Have you opened up the ceiling rose and had a look? If something is wired in an old-fashioned or unconventional way, it can require more expertise to sort than the scope of a Youtube tutorial allows.

I am pretty up for DIY but I draw the line at electrical work beyond rewiring a table lamp or a plug! It's my life on the line if I get it wrong (or a house fire!!).

I'll preface this by saying you shouldn't do it yourself, you should get a qualified electrician to do it etc etc.

But it's not that complicated. Make sure your power is off at the fuse box and double check there is no power going to the ceiling fitting (ideally by using a voltage detector).

When you unscrew the cover, take photos of the wiring set up on the fitting and make sure you can identify which wire goes where - for both the old and new fitting, in case you decide it's too awkward and want to put the original one back on.

The internet is brilliant for DIY stuff like this but the main thing is to make sure you don't get electrocuted Grin.

Thanks both. I think maybe an electrician is needed. The thought of a house fire is quite terrifying Shock
